🌊 Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊

The ocean sustains life on Earth, provides food for billions of people, supports countless livelihoods, and inspires us with its beauty, power, and wonder. Here on the Central Coast, healthy oceans are at the heart of our communities, our culture, and our economy.

One of the best ways we can support ocean health is by supporting sustainable local fisheries. When we choose responsibly harvested local seafood, we're investing in the people who are stewarding marine resources,, strengthening coastal communities, and ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy the bounty of our oceans.

Today, we celebrate the fishermen, seafood producers, scientists, conservationists, and community members working every day to keep our oceans healthy and productive. We all depend on the ocean—and together, we can help ensure it remains vibrant for generations to come.

💙 This World Ocean Day, let's honor, respect, enjoy and protect the waters that connect us all.

For health conscious consumers, seafood often comes with questions about mercury and other potential toxins. Fortunately, our friends at Positively Groundfish are helping to put the full picture in context.

In a recent article, Nutritionist Shadae Zamyad explains how nutrients in seafood, especially selenium, can actually play a protective role by binding with mercury and reducing its potential impact in the body. This means that many types of seafood offer far more nutritional benefit than risk when eaten as part of a balanced diet.

Rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, seafood remains one of the healthiest and most nutrient-dense foods available—supporting heart health, brain function, and overall well-being.

Check out the science behind mercury and selenium, and why seafood - especially local species like salmon and rockfish- continues to be an important part of healthy diets.

Long before Cannery Row became world famous, Chinese fishing families helped build Monterey’s commercial fishing industry. Beginning in the mid-1800s, they established fishing villages along the Monterey shoreline, bringing generations of knowledge, skill, and innovation to the bay. They pioneered methods for harvesting squid and abalone, helped create trade networks, and played an essential role in shaping Monterey’s working waterfront and fishing culture.

Despite facing discrimination, exclusion laws, and even the destruction of their villages by fire, the legacy of these communities lives on in Monterey Bay’s fishing heritage.

As we recognize AAPI Heritage Month, we honor the resilience, contributions, and enduring impact of the Chinese fishing communities whose work helped shape the future of Monterey Bay fisheries.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Here in Monterey Bay, where so much of life is connected to the water, we are reminded every day of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication shown by those who serve their communities.

We extend our gratitude to all who have served, and we hold in remembrance those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

For many families, healthy food isn’t a matter of preference - it’s a matter of access.
Right here on the central coast, local fishermen harvest some of the healthiest, most sustainable seafood in the world. Yet for many seniors, veterans, and families facing food insecurity, fresh seafood can feel out of reach.

That’s why the Community Seafood Program matters.

Because nutritious protein supports healthy aging, growing kids, and stronger communities. And because a simple seafood meal can mean dignity, comfort, and care for someone going through a difficult time.

This work is about more than food. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors - connecting local fishermen with community members who need nourishment most. ❤️🐟

Healthy, sustainable seafood has the power to do more than nourish our bodies — it can strengthen an entire community. ❤️🐟

We’re excited to celebrate our partnership with Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula through this special Get Hooked event!

This one-of-a-kind dinner brings together members of the fishing industry, chefs, and community members to support the Community Seafood Program — helping provide fresh, sustainably harvested local seafood to seniors, families, veterans, and neighbors facing food insecurity across Monterey County.

Every ticket helps support the Community Seafood Program - feeding our community with nutritious Monterey Bay seafood. It’s a celebration of local catch, community, and the people working every day to ensure no one goes hungry.

Join us for an evening of incredible food, meaningful stories, and community impact.
