Save Our Shores

Save Our Shores We foster thriving & sustainable ecosystems through equitable environmental action Our story began 43+years ago.

We’d love to share it with you…

Save Our Shores is a marine conservation 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Santa Cruz, California. We advocate for Clean Shores, Healthy Habitats and Living Waters in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Save Our Shores (SOS) was founded by a grassroots movement in 1978 to stop the threat of offshore oil drilling along the Central Coast of California. After succe

eding, we set out to secure permanent protection of the Central Coast by building coalitions to drive the creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) in 1992. Since then, SOS has removed a diverse set of threats to our marine environment. Advocacy efforts ranged from preventing cruise ship pollution discharge, dissolving wildlife disturbing acoustics, reducing plastic pollution with policy regulations, improving coastal waste management practices through community involvement and most recently, ending illegal sand mining and mass man-made erosion along the MBNMS. Today we are focused on building policies and programs to ensure Clean Shores, Healthy Habitats and Living Waters. 🌊 California's Coast is Not for Sale

Momentum is building to protect our coast from new offshore oil drilling.

This week, both the Santa Cruz City Council and Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to strengthen local protections against offshore oil development and deep-sea mining by updating ordinances that restrict these industries. These actions reinforce our region's long-standing commitment to protecting our ocean, communities, and coastal economy.

These local victories build on the energy of the Save the Bay event held in Santa Cruz on April 26, organized by Save Our Shores and Romero Institute. Environmental leaders, elected officials, activists, musicians, and community members came together to send a clear message: California's coast is not for sale.

Thank you to everyone who has shown up, spoken out, and helped defend our coast. Together, we're strengthening the Blue Wall and protecting California's shoreline for future generations.

Save Our Shores is proud to announce that The Pebble Beach Company Foundation has graciously granted $8,000 to support our work in reducing barriers to outdoor education for youth by funding our Junior Sanctuary Stewards Program.

With these funds, SOS can improve and continue our educational programs that bring youth outdoors to learn directly from their environments.

Bridging this gap with hands-on learning is crucial to instilling healthy eco-identities within our youth that reflect a personal relationship with their environment.

“Nature is the greatest classroom, our Junior Sanctuary Stewards program provides the opportunity for youth to experience it first hand.” -Krista Rogers, SOS Program Manager

Thank you from bottom of our hearts and we're grateful to continue our work !! 💙🐋

Save Our Shores is delighted to announce that Community Foundation Santa Cruz County has selected us to be a beneficiary of their ‘Community Grants’ program once again.

We were most graciously granted $10,000 to support our work in reducing barriers to outdoor education for youth. With these funds, SOS can improve and continue our educational programs that bring youth outdoors to learn directly from their environments.

Bridging this gap with hands-on learning is crucial to instilling healthy eco-identities within our youth that reflect a personal relationship with their environment.

“When young people have the opportunity to connect with nature, they become the next generation of its stewards.” -Krista Rogers, SOS Program Manager

We appreciate you greatly and thank you for all your support !! 💙🌊

Save Our Shores would like to share our continuous appreciation for the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and their investment in our Junior Sanctuary Stewards program with a generous $20,000 grant.

Through our Junior Sanctuary Stewards after school program local youth experience different ecosystems of the Monterey Bay, where they engage in environmental, recreational, and scientific activities.

With this grant, SOS will be able to continue offering these services to schools within Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.

"Every dollar invested in youth outdoor education is a seed planted for the future of our environment.” -Krista Rogers, SOS Program Manager

Thank you for all your support !! 💙🚣‍♂️

Deep beneath the ocean’s surface are ecosystems we are only beginning to understand, yet they may soon face irreversible harm from deep sea mining.

A new article highlights how scientists and local leaders are raising concerns, and how Save Our Shores is working with cities and counties to put protections in place before this industry reaches our coast.

Santa Cruz has a chance to lead once again, just as it has in the past, by taking proactive steps to protect our ocean.
