How we began ...
Extinction Rebellion Santa Cruz began in the midst of the London Rebellion in April of 2019. Frustrated and disheartened by the lack of serious thinking, communication and action by the US public, generally, by the government and by responsible corporate entities around the climate crisis, one young man got hold of an Extinction Rebellion sign and stepped into the street (Pacific Avenue) to voice his anger, frustration and alarm. He was arrested by the Santa Cruz Police Department.
A local mother of two, former local journalist, and current psycho-spiritual teacher saw a picture of this arrest, and--similarly frustrated--contacted this young man to begin to form a local Extinction Rebellion chapter. Within a week, and on international Earth Day, XRSC had held its first meeting, and staged its first Die In in front of O’Neill’s on Pacific Avenue.
Within another couple of months, activists, mothers, grandmothers, fathers, students, Buddhists, climate lobbyists with similar frustrations, and, frankly a rising sense of alarm and even reasonable panic about the situation we find ourselves in, joined on to create a Stewardship Group and several Working Groups, including Action Prep, Media and Messaging, Local Demands, Regenerative Culture and Demand 4 (a just transition, led by the indigenous, poor and people of color). We believe that without widespread knowledge of the state of crisis we are now in, and without intense public pressure to create the immediate, radical, large scale action by local, state and the US government that we need now--at this very late date--we face the extinction of a majority of animal and plant species on Earth, including our own. XR asks: Will we go down like frogs in hot water--or will we jump?
