Action Alert: Speak Up for Active Transportation at the Watsonville General Plan 2050 Open House!

The City of Watsonville has released a draft of the General Plan 2050, which will establish the long‑term vision and policy framework to guide the City’s growth, development, conservation efforts, and public investment through the year 2050. The draft plan is available for review online at watsonville.gov/2440/General-Plan-Update.

The public is invited to join an Open House on Wednesday, October 14, from 5:30-7:30 PM in the Civic Plaza Community Room.

Of particular importance to bike riders is the opportunity to address mobility and complete streets. These topics are covered in the required General Plan Element in planning for transportation. Among other things, the Draft Mobility and Access Element addresses the existing and planned Active Transportation Network. It identifies both gaps to close and new facilities to develop. These include new bike access to the beach on Beach Street and a paving of the Pajaro Levy Trail south of downtown.

Your voice in analyzing and commenting on the draft Active Transportation Network is important. Eventually, the adopted General Plan will lay the groundwork for future priorities, grant applications, and subsequent detailed plans to expand complete streets and active mobility!

Join Bike Santa Cruz County for our upcoming quarterly Bike Advocacy Meeting, with a focus on biking in Capitola.

Capitola is in the middle of important planning and transportation work, including its Active Transportation Plan, improvements to Bay Avenue and 41st Avenue, roadway safety planning, Coastal Rail Trail connections, and ongoing discussion about the Capitola Trestle.

We’ll share updates on these projects, talk about what BSCC is working on across the county, and of course leave time to hear from you.

What safety issues are you experiencing riding? What connections are broken or missing? What projects or policies should BSCC be paying attention to?

Although this meeting will focus on Capitola, the discussion is open to bicycle advocacy issues from across Santa Cruz County. Bring a concern, an idea, a project you want to support, or just come listen and meet other people interested in making biking safer and easier.

Action Alert: Join Us for a Community Open House for the Water Street Separated Bike Lanes Project

The City of Santa Cruz is designing safety improvements for Water Street between North Branciforte Avenue and Poplar Avenue. Come review the draft project plans, learn about proposed changes, ask questions, and share your input with the project team.

We are deeply saddened to learn that a person riding a bicycle was killed Friday afternoon on Soquel Drive near Porter Street after a collision with a person driving a pickup truck. Our hearts are with their family, friends, and community as they grieve this terrible loss. People riding bikes, walking, and using active transportation are among the most vulnerable people on our roads and deserve safe streets. No one should lose their life simply trying to get where they are going. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver was arrested and investigators are examining whether alcohol/drugs were factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing, and we do not yet know enough about what happened. Soquel Drive is one of the most important and critical bicycle corridors in our County and we actively advocate for stronger bike safety measures on this busy road. We will continue to update our community as we learn more about the incident, and call on city and county leaders to commit to making our streets safe for everyone.

Join a focus group for the future of biking and rolling on Westcliff! The City of Santa Cruz is working on their Shoreline Adaptation Management Plans project and is looking for feedback for people who recreate along Westcliff Drive. The focus group is on Thursday, Sept 17 from 4:30-5:30pm, in-person or you can join virtually over Zoom. Now is your chance to help shape the future of biking along our beloved coastal road .

Our 2026 biking survey is out! ✨Thank you to all who took it - this information is vital to us as we plan how we focus our advocacy and programmatic work throughout the county, and important for city leaders to see as they make decisions around our streets.

You can scroll through to see some highlighted stats that came out of the survey, but our biggest takeaway is this: better, safer infrastructure for biking is the number one way to get more people biking. The interest is already there, our streets just need to catch up! 🚲🚲🚲
