Protect your skin and the ocean this World Reef Awareness Day.

Coral reefs are incredibly sensitive, and certain sunscreen chemicals can harm them even in small amounts. Choosing a mineral, reef-friendly sunscreen is a simple, impactful way to help protect these ecosystems. Look for non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients, skip sprays in favor of creams, and don’t rely on “reef safe” labels without checking what’s inside.

Surfrider encourages small changes that add up.
Before your next beach day, take a moment to choose a sunscreen that supports a healthier ocean for everyone.

Do you know what happens to balloons once they are released into the environment? Balloons released outdoors often return as litter, polluting both marine and terrestrial environments. They are a significant cause of marine wildlife deaths and the leading cause of mortality among seabirds linked to plastic pollution.

Want to help? Join our team and help us prevent balloon pollution in Santa Cruz county.

On May 9th, our chapter participated in Santa Cruz County’s Pick Up Day with Pitch In Santa Cruz.

We had 15 volunteers join us and we collected over 366 pounds of trash!

Our volunteers collected
157 plastic food wrappers
88 loose cigarette butts
89 plastic fragments
24 plastic bottles
23 plastic bags
15 plastic lids
And so much more!

You can see a theme here… plastic! Plastic persists in our environment and takes years and years to breakdown but it never truly goes away. It turns into microplastics in our waterways, environment, and in animals. The solution is to reduce the use of single use plastics first then to reuse it then to recycle it! Ultimately, reducing plastic is the best way to go though, and that is one of our key goals and missions for our chapter!

If you would like to help keep our community clean, please sign up for our next beach clean up which will be on Sunday, June 7th at Seacliff State Beach. Visit our website to sign up!
