🌊 King Tides Arrive This Week!

Our ocean is dynamic, and this week offers a powerful look at just how high the water can get. The King Tides returning December 4–6 allow us to see how extreme water levels, storm surges, and erosion interact with our coastline.

👀 Why watch? When you observe these tides, imagine seeing this water level (and the flooded streets or beaches) every day. Understanding what a King Tide looks like today helps us plan for future rising seas.

⚠️ Safety First: We encourage you to head out and witness the power of the ocean, but please take extra precautions on slippery rocks, stay back from big waves, and never turn your back on the ocean!

Help us protect the coast. The Monterey Bay Living Shorelines Program (MBLSP) is using nature-based solutions to protect the lands from Año Nuevo Point to Garrapata Creek. We need your input to do it right.
Tell us what you value most about these State Parks to help us build resilience against coastal storms and erosion.

To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we need to cut our GHG emissions in half by 2030, and governments are increasingly turning to renewable energy to do so.

As California prepares to expand its renewable energy portfolio through 25,000 megawatts (MWs) of floating offshore wind (OSW), CMSF is leading a project to ensure this development is sustainable and responsible for our ocean's health.

CMSF is creating the Environmental Monitoring Guidance (EMG) to serve as a scientific roadmap for the state’s offshore wind development, a project involving 200+ scientists from different ecological, taxonomic, and technological disciplines. With the help of our experts, CMSF is identifying potential impacts from OSW development on the marine environment and recommending the most effective monitoring strategies.

Your donations allow us to continue to invest in interdisciplinary efforts that result in the innovative solutions needed to combat climate change and secure a healthy ocean future.

By 2050, extreme wildfires are expected to increase by 30% globally.

Born on the Central Coast and no stranger to wildfires, CMSF is leading a coalition, MMonterey Bay Climate Adaptation Action Network to reduce wildfire risk in our own backyard.

Over the next four years, five wildfire risk reduction projects will take place in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, spanning 7,150 acres. Projects include installing six miles of strategically thinned vegetation that protects forests and communities from wildfires, reducing fuel loads so future fires burn more slowly and less intensely, and participating in cultural burning practices to mitigate high-severity wildfires.

Donating to CMSF allows us to continue to implement practical, collaborative solutions to keep California safe for all who call it home.

Each year, an estimated 80 endangered whales are killed by ship strikes.

CMSF is working directly with the shipping industry to implement a simple solution: reducing vessel speed where it matters most.

Since its inception in 2014, our Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies partnership has worked with 67 shipping companies, resulting in 1.5 million nautical miles traveled at "whale-safer” speeds of 10 knots or less. Fatal ship-strike risk is reduced by nearly 50% when vessels slow down from 15 knots to this speed.

The benefits don’t end there.

Over the past decade, this program has improved coastal air quality by avoiding 5,900 tons of harmful NOx emissions and reduced underwater noise from participating vessels by approximately 38%.

Your support allows us to expand our partnerships and our impact. A donation to CMSF is an investment in a safer, quieter ocean for marine mammals and a healthier coast for all who call it home.
