A fresh start is a little easier when you have the basics.

BRIDGE recently bought a client pants, a fresh shirt, and a pair of shoes—a few essentials for stepping into what’s next.

Thank you for helping us make that next step a little easier. đź’›

This week’s BRIDGE shopping list: bus passes and phones! 🚌📱

We helped several clients get where they need to go and stay connected along the way—from appointments to calls with family.

Thanks to our supporters for helping us cover these everyday essentials. đź’›

BRIDGE recently helped a client keep his car running by covering the replacement of an essential part. Reliable transportation can mean getting to appointments, picking up groceries, and staying connected to community.

Your support makes practical help like this possible. Thank you for helping us keep people moving. đź’›

Not everything that helps is dramatic.

This week, BRIDGE helped with two phones—including one needed to secure sober living housing—rain gear and basic clothing, and the cost of correcting an error on a RAP sheet that was getting in the way of employment.

A dry sweatshirt. A working phone. An accurate record.

None of these things is complicated. But when someone is trying to find housing, get to work, stay connected, or simply get through a rainy day, the small things matter.

That’s what the BRIDGE Fund is here for. Santa Cruz County Office of the Public Defender

A recent job loss left one of our clients needing a little help covering diabetic testing strips.

BRIDGE was able to step in and cover the cost so he could keep managing his health while getting back on his feet.

Keeping an essential need covered can make a difficult stretch a little more manageable. Santa Cruz County Office of the Public Defender

A few more moments from launch night. Thank you to everyone who came out—and to the Homeless Garden Project for sharing this beautiful space with us. Bridge is officially underway. 💛

Thank you also to the talented Isabelle Preciado and Laura Castillo for volunteering your time to photograph the event.

A small piece of equipment, a bigger point of access.

So many systems assume you have a working phone — VA services, benefits, appointments, transportation, housing, even basic case communication.

For a client who is a veteran of the U.S. military, that assumption was a real barrier. Bridge was able to provide a phone and help reopen access to the people and services trying to reach him.

Thursday evening, the BRIDGE Foundation of Santa Cruz County officially began — surrounded by more than a hundred neighbors, advocates, and supporters at a sold-out celebration at Natural Bridges Farm, in partnership with the Homeless Garden Project.

Golden light. The farm in full late-summer bloom. Live music from Dirty Ukulele and the Entwood Troubadours. A grazing table built around HGP produce, catered by our Santa Cruz County Public Defender defenders, staff, and volunteers —it was a beautiful afternoon.

But the heart of the night was the stories. Keynote speaker W***y Elliott-McCrea reminded us that work, food, housing, and community are all connected. HGP Executive Director Darrie Ganzhorn shared her vision for more farmland and a classroom. And a man served by the Public Defender's office, BRIDGE, and the Homeless Garden Project stood up and spoke about courage, recovery, and reuniting with his children — showing us exactly what becomes possible when a community invests in people.

This was a launch, not a finish line. The work ahead is concrete: warm socks and work boots. Treatment program fees. Bus fare and working phones. School clothes and camp fees for kids who deserve every chance.

Help us bridge the gap. Donate at Donate — BRIDGE Foundation of Santa Cruz County — every contribution goes straight to a neighbor's next step.

🙏 Thank you to our donors, sponsors, musicians, speakers, volunteers, and to for welcoming us to the farm.

Last week, Bridge partnered with the Santa Cruz City Outreach Team to help a client get home—covering a Highway 17 bus pass, Greyhound ticket, and Amtrak ride.

Sometimes getting from here to there takes more than one ticket—and more than one organization. Big thanks to the outreach team for helping us pull it all together. Santa Cruz County Office of the Public Defender
