Mace Crowbear’s story speaks to the urgency of safe, stable housing.

As a member of Housing Matters’ Lived Experience Advisory Group, she shares what she endured while trying to protect her child:

“During my pregnancy, I was homeless the entire time. It was a good day if we could get like a thick piece of cardboard in the bottom of the van… I used to keep my son in a snow outfit… I would wrap my stomach in a blanket… just because I was scared that the baby would get too cold.”

No one should have to face pregnancy without a safe place to call home.
With a strong system of care, families can find stability, safety, and the support they need to move forward.

Curtis began this work in 2005 - delivering food, clothes and building materials to the survivors of hurricane Katrina. Since then he has brought supplies to victims of a string of disasters in Texas and the Camp Fire in Paradise, California. He has gone to the Hopi, Navajo, Pine Ridge and Standing Rock reservations and even Mexico, bringing donations of housewares, linens and clothing. Since he was born and raised on Elm Grove plantation in the same type of poverty, he can relate to the people. Listening to the stories at sacred circles has transformed his life and made him more dedicated to doing service work.

You’re invited to join us for a special evening of connection and conversation at Neighbors for Neighbors: Belonging Builds Community, in partnership with Santa Cruz Public Libraries.

🗓 May 19th
🕕 6:00–7:30 PM
📍 Capitola Branch Library

Neighbors for Neighbors is a welcoming space where community members, both housed and unhoused, come together to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. We’re hearing again and again that people leave these gatherings feeling seen. It is rare to find a room where you can speak from the heart and be truly heard. This is that kind of space.

The discussion is an active, participatory experience focused on building community and fostering real connection. You will be joined in a circle with fellow community members, experts on the topic, and people with lived experience of homelessness.

Our conversations will explore what it truly means to belong and how belonging cultivates a stronger, more connected community. Together, we will reflect on our own experiences of belonging and the impact of not having that experience, while building relationships with others who share a passion for equitable and just treatment of all people.

Neighbors for Neighbors is hosted at two local library branches, Capitola and Branciforte, bringing these conversations closer to home. Join us!
