"Modern Times" Plaque

"Modern Times" Plaque This is the actual image that will be placed on the plaque commemorating the site of the final scene of Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times".

In 1935, Charlie Chaplin came to the Santa Clarita Valley to film the final scenes for his landmark silent comedy, "Modern Times". This film marked the end of the Silent Era. On February 5, 2011, we will be dedicating a historic plaque to honor the site of the final scene. This will be part of a weekend ChaplinFest, which will take place in Newhall, CA.

Fellow silent film aficionados! Tune in this weekend for the 2nd annual Newhallywood Silent Film Festival, streamed into your very own homes from historic Newhall, California. There will be scores of interesting interviews (Leonard Maltin, Serge Bromberg, John Bengtson, Marc Wanamaker to name a few), tours, and "live" music by the lovely and talented Janet Klein, and the spectacular Natalie Mendoza. This year's theme is "Scandals and Tragedies" - as we know, there were countless dramas in Tinseltown back in the days of the silents (Fatty Arbuckle, Mabel Normand, William Desmond Taylor). Hope you can tune in for a segment or two! Happy viewing!

After much hard work, our fundraising efforts for the "Modern Times" monument have finally paid off! Thanks to your generosity, we have fully paid off the beautiful black marble marker created by the talented Charles and Maria Sotelo, owners of High Desert Monuments in Hesperia, California.

The Sotelos donated 100% of the labor required to create the beautiful black marble monument, and took it on faith that the money to pay for the materials would somehow materialize. Thank you all for your support and contributions to help pay these kind people for their belief in us!

We are continuing our fundraising efforts to pay for the stand that will house the marker on Sierra Highway. We will post fundraising events as they come about.

Again, thank you all for your support, and Maria and Charlie Sotelo for their patience and passion for film entertainment history!

GREAT NEWS! Our weekend class/fundraiser at Disney's Golden Oak Ranch has nearly paid for the beautiful black marble marker unveiled at ChaplinFest this past February. Maria and Charles Stoelo (creators of the monument) were on hand for the incredible tour of the Ranch. And equally as exciting, the Stoelos' skill and talents have earned them some work with the City of Santa Clarita! It's so satisfying to see good things come to good people. :)
