BAYCC Statement on the Tragic Attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego

Bay Area Cultural Connections is deeply saddened by the tragic attack reported today at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, the congregation, the students and staff of the center, and the broader San Diego community during this painful time.

We strongly condemn violence of any kind, especially when it targets places of worship, schools, families, or communities gathered in peace. No person should feel unsafe because of their faith, identity, background, or place of belonging.

At moments like this, our shared responsibility is to reject hatred, resist division, and stand together with compassion and dignity. We call on people of all walks of life to choose peace over fear, solidarity over suspicion, and humanity over hostility.

As Bay Area Cultural Connections, we remain committed to building bridges across communities, fostering mutual respect, and supporting a society where every person can live, worship, learn, and gather safely.

May peace, healing, and strength be with all those affected by the tragedy at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

On May 10, 2026, BAYCC and Pacifica Institute hosted a meaningful Mother’s Day-inspired art workshop led by artist Relli Siegel. Open to members of the BAYCC community and the wider public, the gathering brought women together for an afternoon of mindfulness, creativity, and connection.

The workshop began with a guided meditation centered on motherhood, inner peace, and emotional balance. Participants were encouraged to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with themselves in a calm and welcoming environment. Through moments of self-reflection and mindfulness, attendees explored the importance of caring for their own well-being while navigating the many roles and responsibilities they carry in everyday life.

Following the meditation, participants engaged in a mixed-media art experience designed to help them express personal emotions and stories through creativity. The artistic process allowed feelings to surface naturally, creating space for healing, self-discovery, and authentic expression. No prior artistic experience was needed, making the workshop accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Inspired by the words of Barbara DeAngelis — “Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away” — the event offered attendees a rare opportunity to pause, breathe, and focus on themselves in a supportive community setting.

All materials were provided, and participants left not only with their completed artwork, but also with a renewed sense of calm, balance, and connection. Through her compassionate guidance, Relli Siegel created a safe and inspiring space where creativity became a pathway toward inner peace and meaningful community engagement.
