Bronco Urban Gardens (BUG) What is the Silicon Valley HealthCorps?

Bronco Urban Gardens is a food justice outreach program of Santa Clara University working to provide experiential learning opportunities for students of all ages and backgrounds in the garden. Bronco Urban Gardens, or BUG is an environmental justice initiative lead by Santa Clara University's Environmental Studies Institute in partnership with the Silicon Valley HealthCorps. The goal of BUG and it

s associated projects is to increase community food security, sustainability and environmental literacy in Santa Clara Country through the co-creation and technical support of urban gardens and education programs. Other goals include:

-Provide urban agricultural technical support and educational program assistance to improve food security, health and environmental literacy of underserved schools and marginalized communities in Santa Clara County
-Ensure the long-term viability of Santa Clara County school and community gardens by providing free teacher trainings, garden education and volunteer support
-Train a new generation of sustainable agriculture and food system educators
-Foster urban sustainability by connecting communities producing healthy food to natural food systems

Bronco Urban Gardens has teamed up with the Silicon Valley HealthCorps and hosts full-time AmeriCorps volunteers whom run it's various garden based education programs. In an innovative partnership, The Health Trust has joined together with AmeriCorps and nine local organizations to form the Silicon Valley HealthCorps. The goal of this collaboration is to use gardens, farm to school programs and the work of AmeriCorps members to bring fresh fruits, vegetables and education to residents of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The program seeks to engage the community as active participants in promoting and sustaining community and school gardens, and to provide a coordinated, county-wide approach to expanding garden based learning. The program will also increase access to fresh produce through the development of new healthy food resources such as community and school gardens, farmers markets, and community supported agriculture programs.
