SPEAKER: Cheri Wagner
TOPIC: Growing Orchids Semi-hydroponically

Have you heard this term and wondered what the heck is this? What does it mean and why would you want to grow orchids this way? I have been experimenting with this for several years now and have been growing many orchid varieties successful this way. I’ve learned a lot from trial and error and from doing quite a bit of researching on line. Many more orchid growers are using this method and I have learned a few things from their experimentation as well. This presentation will introduce you to what semi-hydroponics is, why you might want to try it, and how to go about getting starting.

OPPORTUNITY PLANT TABLE:
Orchid Design will provide the plant table.

TOPIC: "The Victorian Orchid Craze and Its Odontoglossum Legacy"

The 19th Century was the age of discovery, communication, information and transportation. A passion for orchids occured by the end of the 19th Century in England and given England's climate, cool-growing andean orchids were favorites. The hybrid legacy of those years is carried forward in today's hybrids. My talk spends a fair amount of time on the history of the 19th Century as it relates to plants and then introduces John Leathers and my enthusiasm in breeding and growing high elevation neo-tropical orchids.

BIO: I was born in Berkeley California in 1946. My partner, John Leathers and I bought our first house in 1977 which formerly belonged to singer Country Joe McDonald. It had an attached solarium which we began filling with rare plants and orchids. Orchids became our passion. We currently grow in a 3200 foot rented greenhouse on the Pacific Coast and hybridize plants. We do our own lab work. Careerwise, I was Principal Development Engineer for shared world renowned semiconductor research facilities at UC Berkeley, retiring in 2017.

Dr. Hamilton will donate some Masdevallias, Draculats and Odonts for your raffle.
