November 14 – Saturday Field Trip
For November, instead of our usual Friday evening meeting, we will have a Malihini Orchid Society trip to see several orchid growers’ greenhouses in the area but we do need to know how many members plan to come. We expect to carpool in minivans; about 18 people maximum. Cost will be $15 per person, to cover gas & expenses, and $5 more if we decide to buy a group lunch. We will meet to carpool at the Alma DMV parking lot (111 W. Alma Ave, San Jose) about 8:45 Saturday morning, leaving for Pacifica at 9am. Arriving in Pacifica about 10, we’ll visit Shelldance Orchid Gardens (where they have much more than just orchids!) and during the visit, small groups (4-6 people at a time) can split o to also visit Dan Newman’s adjoining Hanging Gardens nursery. We’ll have lunch at Shelldance, then visit Brookside nursery in Menlo Park on our way back home. Upon returning to San Jose, we’ll visit Orchid Design nursery, conveniently located directly across the street from the Alma DMV parking lot! Discussion at this month’s meeting: Lunch options — do we:
1) Everybody bring their own? - or -
2) Do a potluck somewhat like our Friday meetings? - or -
3) Buy and bring a group lunch? At this month’s meeting, members interested in going on the eld trip will need to decide on lunch, sign up, and pay their share of costs. We will need to get an accurate headcount to arrange vans.
Any member interested in joining the group but either unable to make this month’s meeting to sign up, or preferring to drive them- selves instead of carpooling, please contact Malihini President John Humphrey by mid-October at the latest!

TOPIC: Growing Orchids Semi-hydroponically

Have you heard this term and wondered what the heck is this? What does it mean and why would you want to grow orchids this way? I have been experimenting with this for several years now and have been growing many orchid varieties successful this way. I’ve learned a lot from trial and error and from doing quite a bit of researching on line. Many more orchid growers are using this method and I have learned a few things from their experimentation as well. This presentation will introduce you to what semi-hydroponics is, why you might want to try it, and how to go about getting starting.
