On June 19, 1865, Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, and enforced freedom for the last enslaved Americans, more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. That gap between freedom declared and freedom delivered is what Juneteenth holds.
Today we honor that history and celebrate the amazing resilience, historic achievements and lasting contributions of Black Americans. The work continues, and many organizations across the Silicon Valley are leading the way.
