Troop 74 - Santa Clara, CA

Troop 74 - Santa Clara, CA Located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Boy Scout Troop 74 has been serving the community of Santa Clara, California since 1956.

Prospective Scouts are always welcome to come see what we're about and what we do. Welcome to the wonderful world of Scouts BSA. At Troop 74, we believe in the core values of Scouting. We are building the leaders of tomorrow by using the BSA Patrol Method, which emphasizes Scout leadership and personal responsibility. Our troop activities are planned and executed by the Scouts themselves, based on

their interests and the needs of the troop. The advancement program is supported by troop activities, but the pace of an individual Scout’s advancement is dependent, to a great degree, on his own initiative. The outdoor program offers something for everyone, from events designed for first year Scouts to a full High Adventure program for our older and higher ranking Scouts. All of these programs are designed to build the leadership qualities and moral fortitude that our young men will need when they reach adulthood.

Eagle Project complete – and what a weekend 👏

Really proud of one of our Troop 74 scouts who wrapped up his Eagle project this weekend. This has been in the works since last May, and seeing it all come together over the last few days was pretty special.

The project was building a fence for a local beneficiary, and it wasn’t easy work. There was a lot of digging, lifting, fixing mistakes, staining… and doing it all in the heat. But what stood out most was the effort from everyone who showed up.

Scouts came ready to work, even though it wasn’t their own project. Some haven’t been super active lately, some aren’t even in scouting, but they still showed up and put in the effort. That says a lot.

The adults were there in the background making sure things stayed safe and on track, but this was truly scout-led. That’s always great to see.

And to the scout who led this, you should feel really good about what you pulled off. Planning something like this for almost a year and then leading it through to completion isn’t easy. You did a great job.

Also… good luck getting that stain out of your clothes 😄

If you’ve ever wondered what scouting actually looks like, it’s weekends like this. Real work, real leadership, and a lot of teamwork.

If anyone is thinking about joining Troop 74 or wants to check it out, feel free to reach out. Always happy to have more families come take a look.

We have another group from Troop 74 preparing for a 7 day trek at the famed Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. A group went in 2024 and had a wonderful time, so there is a lot of excitement building for this July trip.

Philmont STRONGLY encourages folks to be physically/mentally ready, so those that are going have been undertaking training hikes to build up endurance with fully loaded packs. A few others went along just for the hike.

For those that know, the front side of Mission Peak from the Stanford lot is no joke. It's 3.5 miles of steep uphill, followed by 3.5 of speed downhill with approximately 2100' of climb. Excellent training!

As expected, the Scouts proved to be in better shape than the adults!

Another Scout is closing in on achieving his Eagle rank, and is full steam ahead on his project: planning the construction of a fence/gate at his Alma Mater elementary school to keep the students safe. The project plans were approved earlier this week, so today was carefully measuring and mapping the project site, with construction starting soon.

Looking forward to seeing the shovels hit the dirt!

"Now Hear This...Now Hear This..."

Many hands from Troop 74 were on deck to visit the USS Hornet, a World War II-era aircraft carrier that has been converted to a museum. They have a great overnight program where Youth/Scout groups can live aboard one night in the sailor's bunks and take several several special tours. Being an older group, we got more of a STEM-based tour, and went into many of the engineering spaces to learn how these subjects apply in the real world.

(One might say it was more of a "STEAM" tour, as many of the ship's systems were actually steam-driven.)

We arrived around 5pm, toured until evening chow, then another tour until 9:30 with lights out around 10pm. Reveille came too early at 7am, then morning chow and yet another tour until 10am.

Highlights included the hanger and flight decks, the bridge, radio rooms, weather stations, combat info center, Pri-Fly, boiler and engine rooms, mess halls, etc. Our berths were right above the anchors on the bow of the ship: thankfully those didn't drop in the middle of the night.

A very worthwhile outing. Plus we didn't once worry about rain on a winter camping trip. ;)

Last fall, Troop 74 had a blast at the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival. It's a fun, two-day tradition our Scouts always look forward to. From cooking together and setting up our booth to selling sausages and falafels, it was all about teamwork, learning new skills, and making friends as the troop continues to grow.

Each T74 camping trip usually has a skills theme, so one of our Scouts decided to earn the Orienteering Merit Badge and share those skills at our second Fall Troop camping trip at Joseph D. Grant County Park. Being able to navigate in an area with just a map and compass is not only a useful skill, it turned out to be a lot of fun! It's one of those opportunities where navigating off-trail is actively encouraged.

For this badge, he had to set up a cross-country course at least 2,000 meters long with at least five control markers. There was so much great terrain that we ended up with about 4000 meters and 10 controls, so lots of great opportunities to reinforce the new map reading skills. (deciphering the many map symbols, taking/following a compass bearing, route choice, contouring, fine navigation, etc.)

Three teams did the course, and their course times were pretty close.

Following the course, we did the usual camping things: camp setup, cooking, campfire, Taps, lights out, etc.

Looking forward to the next trip!

The (1st annual?) Great SF Bay Bike Adventure! This was a truly memorable waterfront bike ride which met the 15 mile trip requirement for the Cycling (Road) Merit Badge.

We wanted the Scouts to experience commuting with their bikes, so we started at the Millbrae CalTrain/BART Station, then rode CalTrain up to 4th/King in the City. From there we pedaled along the Embarcadero past the SF Giants Stadium, under the Bay Bridge, and past Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf. From there we climbed up to Fort Mason (short/steepish), then along the Marina to the infamous Wave Organ at the SF Marina. (Sadly the tide was too high to hear much).

We then followed the shoreline through Crissy Field out to Fort Point under the Gold Gate Bridge, then a sustained climb up into the Presidio and a little trail riding out to the coast. Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on the west side was certainly a highlight, then walking directly under the bridge to reach the famous Golden Gate Bridge North Vista Point. Next a speedy downhill into Sausalito and a quick ice cream treat/reward before boarding the Ferry back to SF.

A quick commute on BART brought us back to Millbrae, with a quick stop at SFO.

This was truly an amazing trip, I hope other Troops consider it. (See the comments for the route track.)

Always nice to give back to the places we frequent.

We've done several training hikes in the hills above the Stevens Creek Reservoir, so when we were looking for volunteer locations during the annual California Coastal Cleanup Day (September 20), we knew this was the place.

Thanks, Santa Clara County Parks, for keeping this gem clean and available for all of us to use!
