Environmental Defense Center

Environmental Defense Center Working to protect and enhance our local environment since 1977. Every so often, an event captures the attention of an entire nation. history.

Whether terrible or celebratory, these rare moments can impact the way we view the world and have the potential to affect significant change. The 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill was one such event. On the morning of January 28, 1969, while the Union Oil crew on Platform A was retrieving a drill pipe from the bottom of an oil well five miles offshore from Summerland, something went terribly wrong: the

well blew out. Thus began one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. By the time it was over, more than three million gallons of oil were released, fouling 35 miles of coastline, killing as many as 15,000 seabirds, and poisoning dolphins, seals, and sea lions. The devastating images and painfully slow recovery led to the passage of some of our most important and enduring environmental laws at the state and federal levels – laws including the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and the California Coastal Act. Community leaders in Santa Barbara realized that in order for the promise of these new laws to be fulfilled, there needed to be an organization on the ground, utilizing these new tools to ensure nothing like this could ever happen again here. In 1977, the doors were opened at the Environmental Defense Center (EDC), providing the people of the south central coast an environmental watchdog, an advocate, and a legal voice to counter the power of oil companies and other corporate polluters. Since that time, EDC has represented more than 100 different nonprofit organizations, retiring 40 offshore oil leases, stopping multiple efforts to import liquefied natural gas, and permanently preserving more than 100,000 acres of open space. Working from the historic Cordero Adobe building which we own in downtown Santa Barbara, along with a Ventura County office, located in the city of Ojai, EDC continues to this day as a vital community resource. We advocate for policies which protect our environment and human health and through expert legal representation of our clients. Over the years, our growing awareness of the impacts of climate disruption has reinforced the important role that EDC plays by standing up for our environment, our communities, and future generations. 🦦 Happy World Otter Day from EDC!

We’ve been fighting for these little guys for a long time — and we’re not stopping. When commercial fishing groups challenged the federal decision to end California’s decades-long “no-otter zone,” we intervened, took it to court, and won. Southern sea otters are now reclaiming their historic range and restoring the kelp forests they depend on. 🌿🌊

Fun reminder: these are keystone species — without them, entire kelp forest ecosystems collapse. They also eat 25% of their body weight every day.

Here’s to the otters, and to the work still ahead. 💙

Paddle Out to Protect Our Coast 🌊🛶 | Two days before the 11th anniversary of the Plains All American Oil Spill, environmental advocates, students, Tribal leaders, and community members gathered at Refugio Beach to commemorate the disaster and stand up for our coastline. Together, they paddled out with a clear message: no new offshore drilling in California waters, and no continuation of Sable's oil operations along the Gaviota Coast. 🐟🌿 The ocean remembers — and so do we.

Thanks to our partners who helped make the event happen:
Surfrider Foundation (Santa Barbara County Chapter and UCSB Student Club), Environmental Defense Center, Center for Biological Diversity, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Sierra Club, Fearless Grandmothers, UCSB Environmental Affairs Board, Oceana, CFROG, and Get Oil Out!

🌊 11 years ago, a corroded pipeline devastated our coastline. Today, that same pipeline is being restarted — and we're fighting back.

May 19th marks the 11th anniversary of the Plains Oil Spill at Refugio Beach, one of the largest environmental disasters in California history. Oil spread 150 miles down the coast, poisoning marine habitats and wildlife. The pipeline responsible? Sable Offshore has restarted it.

And the threat doesn't stop there. The Trump administration is also pushing to open California's coast to new offshore oil leasing and development and wants to allow fracking right here in the Santa Barbara Channel.

The fight is not over. EDC remains committed to protecting our coastline.

"This is one of the most precious ecological systems on the planet, and we have to protect it." — Linda Krop, EDC Chief Counsel

05/18/2026

On May 7th, we stood alongside U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, Rep. Salud Carbajal, Assemblymember Gregg Hart, tribal leaders, and Central Coast advocates to call out Sable Offshore Corp.’s unlawful restart of a defective oil pipeline — the same pipeline responsible for the devastating 2015 Refugio oil spill that poisoned coastal habitats and killed marine mammals up and down the coast. 🌊

Sable has flouted a court injunction won by EDC, bypassed state law, and relied on federal overreach to push this project forward. A Santa Barbara County judge has already refused to lift that injunction. They are operating in defiance of it anyway.

“In almost five decades of working on these issues, we have never seen such a blatant violation of state law and court orders,” EDC Chief Counsel Linda Krop said.

EDC and our partners also announced our filing of a motion to intervene in the State of California’s case against the Trump administration — we’re not backing down.

“When power is abused like this, the easiest thing to do is to throw up our hands and give up,” Brady Bradshaw from the Center for Biological Diversity’s Action Fund said. “But we’re fighting back, because we have to draw a line in the sand.”

Join us Friday, May 15th for a discussion around the risks of oil extraction and the ongoing work to protect our region’s vital resources. This annual Memorial Lecture honors the legacy of Darcy Aston, a 1981 UCSB Environmental Studies alum and beloved member of the Santa Barbara community, and brings us together to explore solutions for water quality, watershed protection, and environmental stewardship.

This year’s program will feature a moderated panel discussion led by Linda Krop, Chief Counsel at the Environmental Defense Center, featuring Assemblymembers Steve Bennett and Gregg Hart. They will reflect on the legacy of environmental action since the 1969 oil spill and examine the impacts of oil extraction and transport on water quality, the role of policy and advocacy in driving change, and the challenges and opportunities ahead. A reception with light refreshments will follow the discussion.
