Smokey update 😺🐾❤️

The daily HBOT treatments continue to help his wound heal, and we’re grateful to finally be seeing progress. Before tomorrow’s treatment, Smokey will see both his oncologist and his radiologist, and we’ll learn whether his cancer has progressed or remained relatively stable.

The doctors in Texas told us today that his wound is now under control enough to resume treatment, but they would like a report on the status of his tumor before making a final decision. It’s a bit scary, but the wound had become the most urgent challenge, and now we are hopeful we can turn our focus back to fighting the cancer itself.

His path remains narrow and filled with almost daily challenges, but we continue to find joy wherever we can. One unexpected surprise is how much Smokey enjoys the road trips. He even seems to enjoy his “dives” in the hyperbaric chamber.

We continue taking things one day at a time, celebrating every small victory, and cherishing every moment. Through it all, Smokey continues to show us what courage, resilience, and living in the moment truly look like.

Many of you know Smokey’s story. In 2016, he was one of the very first cats cured of FIP during the groundbreaking drug trials at UC Davis. What began as a fight to save one beloved cat became something much bigger
Over the past decade, Smokey has helped inspire the ZenByCat community to raise more than $750,000 for FIP research. Those efforts have helped advance treatments that have saved countless cats around the world, and our work is far from finished.
Lately, much of our time and energy has been focused on helping Smokey through his own cancer battle. Because of that, we haven’t been talking as much about ZenByCat, and donations have declined. Yet the need for research continues. Better treatments are still needed, and our ultimate goal remains the same: a world where no cat suffers from FIP.

Smokey heads back to Dallas for his third treatment with the experimental plant virus that we hope is helping stimulate his immune system to fight his cancer. We return home Saturday, and then on Wednesday we head to Pasadena to begin what we hope will become twice-weekly Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments to help his wound heal. The following week, he also needs to see his oncologist in Studio City before returning to Dallas again on 6/18.
Through all of this, Smokey has adapted to the constant travel amazingly well… maybe even better than his humans 😺
We are incredibly grateful for all the doctors, vet techs, and friends who are working so hard to help him, and for all the prayers, love, and well wishes coming from people around the world. That support means more than words can express.

Smokey has more good days. No word from his Texas doctors yet. Zorbium absorbed thru his skin administered every 4 days takes care of his pain. Unfortunately his antibiotics have to be given orally and that is not a fun time for him or his humans. The fact that he still runs on his wheel is incredible. Superhero Smokey 🐾❤️😺
