slingshot / ALPHA ART STUDIO Slingshot is a program of the Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara (est. 1953).

Slingshot is a nonprofit progressive arts studio that supports the creative practice and professional visibility of artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Santa Barbara County. Founded in 2013 to create a dedicated space for studio art practice for adults living with IDD in Santa Barbara County, Slingshot / Alpha Art Studio is committed to building an equitable platform for inclusion in the field of contemporary art. Alpha Resource Center is a 501c(3) non-profit organization funded by the State of California, profits from the Alpha Thrift Store, and private donors.

Join us tomorrow night for the opening reception of New Muralism at UCSB’s Glass Box Gallery from 4-6pm.

You may have seen this exhibition in 2024 at the Channing Peake Gallery downtown. The exhibition presented 10 mural panels that rendered the artists’ original works at scale to surround the viewer in the artists’ vision of themselves and the world they occupy or imagine.

We’ve chosen to install 7 of the panels at UCSB’s campus gallery to share it with a new audience.

As we wrap the week here in the studio, we want to give a special shoutout to our amazing Teaching Artists who make it all possible. September 14-18 is recognized as National Direct Support Professionals week, a time to give a little extra thanks to the people behind the scenes here at Slingshot, supporting our artists with everything from dialing in their composition to helping heat up “chili-changas” at lunch time. So here’s to Zoe, Jeni and Lucy (who’s final day with Slingshot was late last week).

To call these artists the dream team is an understatement and we are incredibly grateful to each one of them. SLINGSHOT FOREVER! 🧚‍♀️🧚🧚‍♀️

Art Fest 2026🌟

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who showed up to support Slingshot artists last Saturday. It was our biggest event to date, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Community Arts Workshop and Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative. A big thank you to Ruben Zarate for keeping the vibes high all day and Moxie Bright Evan for making sure everyone was hydrated and nourished. The artists love to see their work in your home, so make sure to tag us with any pics you take!

Check out Dylan Long’s artwork in Post-Wild: Nature in the 21st-Century at the Betteravia Gallery in Santa Maria. The show explores how contemporary artists interpret and challenge ideas of nature today. The opening reception is this evening, 5-7pm.
