We are pleased to share information regarding an exciting new initiative from the Santa Ynez Chumash Environmental Office called the Little Pine Project.

The Little Pine Project is focused on propagating and germinating native tree species, including Coulter pine, Jeffrey pine, Douglas fir, and others, in Santa Barbara County. This important program will be critical for supporting forest restoration efforts in Los Padres National Forest, including replanting areas of Little Pine Mountain, affected by the 2007 Zaca Fire.

The program focuses on seed collection, germination and early plant care to prepare healthy trees for a successful transition from the nursery environment to the wilds of the Los Padres National Forest. To ensure genetically relevant seed stock, each seed is harvested by hand from pine cones collected directly from the regions being targeted for restoration.

The young trees pictured here will continue to grow under the care of the Environmental Department until they are ready for planting in the burn scar areas this winter.
