We are so excited to present our September Volunteer of the Month- William Noack! 🤩

William has been an incredible part of our Society for over a decade, serving as a member of The Board of Directors and helping with all sorts of back end operations. He is also currently in charge of our property rentals, alarm, gate, and interior library maintenance.

William first visited the Sahyun Library in 2013 after seeing an advertisement for our annual open house. Despite living only a few blocks away since 1996, he had never actually been inside! After visiting, William said that he was,”instantly impressed and joined the Society on the spot.”

Since he lived so close to the library, he was also recruited to be in charge of any emergencies or alarm calls. One particularly memorable night began with a fire alarm going off. This led to him having quite the impromptu adventure that included a fire engine and firemen needing to enter the library!

William’s interest in genealogy began very young, when he was 12 or 13. He’d grown up seeing the genealogical research and records his father had done in the 1930s. This interest only grew when his grandmother told him that she knew nothing about one of her grandmothers. This sent William and his mother to the Los Angeles Public Library Genealogy Room and he was able to trace his grandmother’s line back to the Mayflower and even to King Edward I. William said of this “Finding royalty was exciting, especially for a young boy!”

After more than 60 years of pursuing this hobby, William says he still discovers new things. While volunteering at the front desk, he learned one of his great-great-great grandfathers was involved in Napoleon’s invasion of Russia!

William is also an avid book collector, with a library boasting over 35,000 volumes. He recently inherited 200,000 more from a friend, so he will be busy working through those while also thankfully still being involved in our society.

Thank you William for all of the time, knowledge, and behind the scenes work you contribute to SBCGS. We are looking forward to many more years! ❤️

The Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society invites the public to its free monthly meeting on Saturday, July 18, 2026, featuring the Mission Canyon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). 🇺🇸

Saturday, July 18, 2026
9:30am - 12:00 Noon
Location: Trinity Lutheran Church
909 N. La Cumbre Road, Santa Barbara

Virtual attendance via Zoom is available with advance registration at SBGen.org: https://sbgen.org/meetings-classes/calendar/ #!event/2026/7/18/monthly-meeting

Five DAR members will present “Our Patriot Ancestors,” sharing their ancestors’ stories in 18th-century costume — including an authentic hooped gown — and bringing to life the ordinary men and women whose courage made America possible. Farmers, blacksmiths, teenagers, and elders: these were the people who defied the world’s most powerful army 250 years ago.

Founded in 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution counts among its members direct descendants of Patriots who contributed to the American Revolution — on the battlefield and in support roles.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and informal discussions with the Society’s Special Interest Group topics from beginning genealogy to writing family histories. A brief business meeting begins at 10:30 a.m and the DAR presentation is at 11:00 a.m. We hope to see you all there!

Happy June! After a busy May full of Salt Lake City research and travel we are excited to get back on track for our Volunteer of the Month! This month, we are proud to feature Karen Ramsdell! 🤩

Karen is the utility player of our Society- she has served us in so many roles including President, governance, programs, and now as the co-director of programs. Karen says that she has truly enjoyed every single role over the years, but “what stands out most is the privilege of working alongside so many talented and dedicated people.” Through her work as President, Karen prepared for the role by reading through decades of board minutes and taking counsel from longtime volunteers. Many of our current policies represent the fruits of her leadership planted long ago.

Like many others, Karen’s journey into genealogy was fueled by her passion and curiosity for her own family. Despite always having a passion for history- she majored in it at UCSB and preserved airport history through her work as the head of SBA- her spark was unexpected and came through sifting through family photos and seeing her grandmother’s handwritten name on the 1900 census. Karen says, “I was hooked. Before long I was burning the midnight oil chasing family roots — and that search eventually led me to the Society. I joined the Society in 2000, just two years after the Society received the gift of the property that is now home to the Sahyun Library. Even without Santa Barbara roots, I quickly found the research support and community I was looking for.”

Karen’s genealogy experience is also truly a family affair- she and her daughter Holly have been research partners almost from the beginning (about 20 years!). They’ve researched different family lines together, travelled to ancestral homelands, and made many trips to the FamilySearch library in Utah. Speaking on this, Karen says, “I feel genuinely lucky that she shares this passion with me — not many adult children want to spend their vacations in archives with their mother! She joined the Society in 2017 and is now our Outreach Chair, so we get to volunteer together as well. It's one of the unexpected gifts this hobby has given me.”

Thank you Karen for all of your contributions and for your passion- we look forward to many more years of service and research together! ❤️
