The closure of USAID projects has had huge implications for Sunrise and Cambodian families.

Previously, many of our needs were met by agencies who have now closed or been forced to charge hefty fees for their services. One of these projects was psychological counselling for our children.

At Sunrise, we do our best to offer basic counselling to our kids through our social work team and staff. However, the kids that come to us have been abused, trafficked into prostitution and begging rings, worked in forced labour from a very young age, come from dysfunctional families or abandoned and know nothing of their family or origins. This can affect them greatly in many ways, especially as they enter their teenage years. To assist them in processing these difficult memories, we are very anxious to offer them professional counselling with a psychologist. Free counselling for our kids is no longer available. However, we have found a wonderful team who are willing to come to our centre 3 times a week at almost half their usual rates. We are very keen to start this program asap to give our kids everything they need to thrive. The annual cost for a comprehensive program would be A$10,000. But any amount would help us make a start, prioritising children who are currently facing major personal hurdles.

All donors get tax receipts and our administration costs are a low 7% in contrast to the high charges of many other charities.
