Please email [email protected] for more information. ** The OSD Canto~Baile Program provides rich standards-based and curriculum-integrated arts education in primarily under-served and low-income schools serving at-risk populations. Through this program we hope to improve the education and personal development of these students, presenting them with an inspirational and fun long-term learn

ing opportunity and helping to reduce the drop out rate. Finally, the program aims to increase participation in the arts in our community through expansion and diversification of audiences. The Canto~Baile program focuses on an interdisciplinary learning process powered by arts integration with fourth grade study of California history. It utilizes music, dance, culture and community traditions of Santa Barbara to provide students with a tangible experience of their social studies curriculum and education standards. This classroom program links directly to the Fiesta celebration, making student learning come alive and increasing the community impact of OSD. The project is an opportunity to establish physical, artistic and social connections to our local early California heritage. Specifically, these traditional songs and dances emulate and describe Rancho family life. Learning goals include student mastery of two songs and two dances, bringing the reality of history into their voices and movements. Cultural goals include preservation of historic Santa Barbara culture through instruction and presentation. Through an exceptional program of education in the classroom tied to public performance, Canto~Baile seeks to preserve and proliferate Santa Barbara's unique historic culture in the community as an opportunity to recreate and relate to our past.

"As an arts enthusiast, I just wanted to let you know how moving and charming your group's performance was at Flor y Canto 2012, which in itself is a charming piece of Fiesta.

Researching and reviving the local contradance tradition, and teaching it to 4th graders, is a wonderful idea! I think the children will never forget this experience or the lovely social skills it revives.

This dance project clearly brings local history alive for the children and the audience. It conveys a quieter time of graciousness and respect for one another. It's a beautiful enrichment program in so many ways. All this was evident from the performance!

Great that you are doing this. You clearly have a lot to offer here, with your expertise, taste and training. Kudos to everyone involved. I hope this program grows and flourishes in years to come."

FIESTA WAS AMAZING!! We had an incredible and very fun time performing at various events. The kids really enjoyed the Children's Parade! Thank you to all of our supporters, the OSD Board of Directors, and to everyone who helped make this program successful during our pilot period.
