The first blue whales of the year were sighted this week by Island Packers and Condor Express Whale Watching 🐋! The presence of these gentle giants means one thing and one thing only… krill!! Our last huge krill year was in 2024, in which dozens of blue whales stationed themselves in the channel for months. This abundant food source is fed upon by all baleen whale species, with 25 humpbacks, 2 fin whales, and common dolphins also seen in the area feeding! (A classic Santa Barbara Grand Slam 💥)

As the season progresses, we’re hopeful more of these diamonds of the sea are reported by our responsible tour operators 🐋

On Monday Co-Director joined Policy, Information, and Management Officer of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Sean Hastings on one of the monthly whale surveys of the channel 🐋 Sean also founded the program, a voluntary vessel speed reduction request now underway across the entire state of California. The season started on Earth Day 🌎 and will run until the end of the year.

Monitoring whale whereabouts is conducted in multiple ways throughout the channel. Whales are spotted from above during these survey flights, as the team runs the entire length of the shipping lanes, to the west of San Miguel Island when weather allows. Whale watchers and boaters are encouraged to report whale sightings via the free “whale alert app,” from ’s “Whale Safe,” program. The program also has an underwater acoustic buoy, constantly monitoring for whale calls 🔊 Together, a collaborative effort between scientists, whale watchers, shipping lines, policy makers, and our everyday citizens are working towards a safer and more abundant channel. During this recent flight, 20 whales were seen consisting of humpback whales, one fin whale, and one unidentified whale.

We are proud of all of the dedicated individuals working towards a safer more connected future for our whales 🐋

In order of left to right, Holly Lohuis (Marine Biologist, Co-Director of ), Sean Hastings (Policy Information and Managemnet officer of Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, founder of ), and John Hancock.

Hello SBCWHA supporters! We are thrilled to have been nominated for Lazy Acres Natural Market’s Envirotokens program, and we need YOUR vote to win 🐋

Envirotokens is Lazy Acres’ way of giving back. Customers vote for local organizations they love, and the top 6 vote-getters at each store location receive funding for a full year. We are of course voted for the Santa Barbara location.

This program is one way Lazy Acres thru their customers involvement is putting money directly into the hands of community groups making a difference.

Voting opened on Earth Day 🌎 at lazyacres.com/vote The best part? You can vote once per day, per email address, so every single day counts between now and June 2.

If we’re one of the top 6 vote-getters, we’ll receive Envirotokens funding starting July 1, 2026 through June 2027- support that goes directly toward getting more students out on the boats learning about the whales in our Santa Barbara Channel and more.

Here’s how to help:

1. Vote today at lazyacres.com/vote
2. Set a daily reminder to keep voting through June 2
3. Share this with your friends, family, and colleagues

This is a fun, free, and easy way to support our work, get us more recognition, and it can make a difference for the whales. 🐋 We appreciate any votes and fun to learn what other non-profits were nominated. You can vote for 5 of them each time.

Thank you for your support for SBCWHA 🌍
