Sanctuary Centers

Sanctuary Centers Sanctuary Centers offers evidence-based programs and comprehensive behavioral health services. Visit us online to learn more, sanctuarycenters.org

Since 1976, Sanctuary Centers Santa Barbara has been honored to help more than 10,000 clients cope with severe mental illness, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depression, PTSD, and co-occurring disorder (mental illness coupled with alcohol or drug addiction). Sanctuary Centers was established as a private nonprofit organization in order to devote itself to these core principals:

An injured mind is no less deserving of attention than an injured body.
• Reduced costs and increased treatment availability enable more people with mental health challenges to receive the support they deserve.
• An accurate diagnosis leads to equally accurate treatment.
• Devoted, accomplished, and compassionate care experts accelerate wellbeing.
• Warm, safe, and thoughtful accommodations improve trust.
• Greater knowledge leads to improved practices.
• A community that adequately supports its most vulnerable citizens is a community that thrives. One in five people suffers a mental health challenge each year. One in 20 suffers a serious mental illness (SMI) which is wholly debilitating. Let's end the stigma and improve the care. Sanctuary Centers believes we are truly "Better Together."

In memoriam- It is with heavy hearts that we remember our friend and colleague, Todd Ingram.

Todd was a rare human being, with a capacity for love, light, kindness, and generosity that touched countless lives. For more than two decades, Todd was an integral part of Sanctuary Centers, leaving his mark not only on our buildings and properties, but on the people who had the privilege of knowing him.

Todd began his journey with Sanctuary Centers in 1999, rebuilding what he affectionately referred to as the "dollhouse," a storage shed structure at Sanctuary House that still stands today. Over the years, he worked alongside Barry and staff to maintain and improve Sanctuary Centers' properties, dedicating himself to creating spaces where healing and recovery could flourish. As Todd once reflected, “My work is all over Sanctuary House properties. I guess that is my legacy.”

Yet Todd's true legacy extends far beyond the projects he completed. He witnessed lives transformed through treatment and recovery, and he deeply believed in the work being done to support individuals on their journeys toward recovery.

On his final day with Sanctuary Centers, Todd shared these words with our staff: “Thanks to all, it has been a great ride. Take care.”

Todd, the pleasure was ours. Thank you for your years of service, your unwavering dedication, and the warmth you brought to our community. Your legacy and friendship lives on in the places you helped build, the lives you touched, and the memories we will forever cherish.

You will be deeply missed.

Last Friday, clients, artists, and the local community came out to Sanctuary Centers Art Show in support of Mental Health Awareness Month. It was a beautiful, well-attended event and despite the gloomy weather, the vibrant art brought so much color and light to the day. Thank you to the extraordinary artists who reached out and participated in the event and to all who joined us in support. A special thanks to on State Street for keeping us caffeinated, Goleta for the delicious hand-pulled bagels, and Russel’s Donuts Ventura for the sweet treats.

Art will be hanging throughout the month of May, so stop by the clinic (23 W. Micheltorena street) M-F 9 to 5 to see the incredible art for yourself.
