Come lend a hand in the stewardship of the Mission Lagoon restoration area! Last month, we cleaned up trash around the lagoon area and discovered that invasive sweetclover (Melilotus spp.) was outcompeting some of the native plants. At this month's event, we will be carefully removing the sweetclover to make room for the native species.

Please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website to RSVP or ask any questions you have. Please bring your own garden gloves. All participants must sign a waiver, or have a parent sign a waiver if under 18. Make sure to bring water, sunscreen, and suitable attire, including closed toed shoes. If you need your volunteer hours certified on a form for school or work, bring that as well.

Thank you to for supporting us in planning the event!

Let us re-introduce ourselves! SBUCC is now the Santa Barbara Urban Creeks Collective.

As many of you know, the Santa Barbara Urban Creeks Council was formed in the 1990s when a group of local residents grew concerned about threats to the creeks and watersheds of Santa Barbara County, and came together to take action. Our organization is built on their passionate dedication to stewarding, restoring, and advocating for the protection of healthy urban creeks, a purpose that grows ever more relevant in the face of increasing human impacts on ecosystems.

As both watersheds and communities are always evolving, SBUCC has been evolving as well to maintain relevance to community needs. We're increasing our focus on inviting the public to explore and learn about their watersheds, since having more caring eyes and hands on the creeks is vital for their protection. We envision a future in which communities understand, appreciate, and connect with their watersheds; treasuring and protecting them for years to come.

We changed the "Council" in our name to "Collective" to better reflect the open, "grassroots" relationship we aspire to have with fellow stakeholders and community members. As the Santa Barbara Urban Creeks Collective, we want to welcome the perspectives of all members of the community so that we can work together to support safe, healthy watersheds and creeks even better than before!

Everyone lives in a watershed, so everyone is invited to be part of our Collective! Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities and other ways to get involved, or email us at [email protected].

Thank you to those who showed up at our Mission Lagoon Cleanup over the weekend! We enjoyed being outside on a sunny Saturday morning, helping care for our local ecosystem. We removed 15 lbs of trash from the beach and lagoon area, much of it microtrash such as styrofoam pieces. If you couldn't make it this weekend, stay tuned- we're hoping to have another one in April or May!

Thank you to City of Santa Barbara for providing supplies and co-sponsoring the cleanup as part of the Adopt-a-Beach program!

Please join us on March 1 for our first Mission Lagoon Cleanup of 2025! The timing works out well with the recent rains, as cleaning up the beach and lagoon area is the last chance to remove litter that has washed down from the upper watershed before it gets into the ocean.

Please contact us at [email protected] to RSVP or ask any questions you have. We encourage you to bring your own reusable cleanup supplies (e.g. gloves, trash grabbers, buckets) if you have them, but if not, we will provide you with supplies. Free parking permits for the morning will also be provided. All participants must sign a waiver, or have a parent sign a waiver if under 18.

Don't forget about your love of creeks and watersheds this Valentine's Day!

There's plenty to love about healthy watersheds, so let's show our love back by taking care of the creeks and the areas around them!

We're still working on some finishing touches to the Coastal Resource Information Center at the City of Goleta Government Community Center, and hope to have it open soon. In the meantime, we will be using these bulletin boards outside the room as an information center about local creeks and other coastal resources. Stay tuned!

This weekend, a small group of SBUCC board members and supporters cleaned up our Adopt a Beach site at Mission Creek Lagoon. We removed 11.3 lbs of mostly microtrash, including countless tiny pieces of styrofoam. It served as a good reminder that the best way to keep styrofoam out of our watersheds is to not use it at all!

Stay tuned for opportunities to help take care of the watersheds with us in 2025! If you know of a site near you that should be the next cleanup location, please let us know.

Thank you to for continuously supporting us in our cleanups of this site!

Thank you to Ortega Park SB for inviting us once again to table at the Dia de los Mu***os celebration last weekend! Join us for our 3rd annual Mission Creek Bike Ride on September 22, 9am, starting at Rocky Nook Park!

Local creek, nature, and bike enthusiast Louis Andaloro will be once again leading us on a tour down the watershed, stopping to investigate various points of interest as we make our way to the Lagoon at East Beach.

Come one, come all! Everyone is welcome on this tour, from families seeking a fun weekend activity, to neighbors wanting to explore their watersheds, to avid cyclists looking for any opportunity to get on a bike, and everyone in between. Just RSVP on our website, and show up with a bike, helmet, and sense of curiosity about your local watershed.

Join us for California Coastal Cleanup Day at Oak Park! We'll be there on Saturday, 9/21, from 9 to noon.

Did you know that 80% of ocean trash comes from land? Most of that isn't even from the beach itself, but washes down through the watershed. That's why we're focusing for the second year on Mission Creek at Oak Park, where trash enters the creek from the picnic areas, parking lot, and road and would flow down to East Beach if we didn't catch it at its source.

More details and a link to the registration page are on our website. We look forward to seeing you there! Bring your own reusable gloves, trash pickers, and buckets if you have them, and if not, we'll provide supplies.
