Congrats to Neida Garcia! ๐Ÿ˜€๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŽŠ

After participating for two years in the SBCC Promise, Neida graduated this spring. She's headed to Cal State Fullerton in the fall to pursue a degree in psychology, with plans to earn a masterโ€™s.

A first-generation college student, Neida overcame many challenges and credits the SBCC Promise with making her education possible.

โ€œThe SBCC Promise allowed me to attend for two years for free, and made college affordable,โ€ Neida shared.

โ€œIโ€™ve learned that people have their personal definitions of success, and I consider myself to be extremely successful. I am proud to be where I am, knowing that I will be transferring to a four-year university."

Thank you to all of the generous donors who make the SBCC Promise possible!

Congratulations to the organizers and participants of the successful 2025 Summer Bridge Program!

The SBCC Foundation was proud to help support this exciting initiative that took place last week, generously supported by Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) and the SBCC Foundation, partnering with Santa Barbara Unified School District PEAC (Program for Effective Access to College) and Carpinteria Unified School District.

Incoming ninth-grade students from Carpinteria High School and the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD)โ€”including those from Santa Barbara and Goletaโ€”were welcomed to campus for a hands-on introduction to career technical education in culinary arts, with a deep dive into the local hospitality industry.

The program featured classes on campus and engaging field trips to notable establishments such as Loquita, Lucky Penny, Helena Avenue Bakery, The Lark, La Paloma Cafรฉ, and the Santa Barbara Farm Education Foundation.

Students also took part in outdoor activities, the Raรญces Student Challenge, and an inspiring keynote by Dr. Victor Rios, UC Santa Barbara professor and author, who shared his powerful personal story and encouraged students to follow their dreams.

Celebrating Tom Garey and SBCC Theatre! ๐ŸŽญ๐ŸŽŠ

Charles Thomson Garey, lovingly known as Tom, served as the Director of Design and Technology for the SBCC Theatre Department from 1975โ€“2011. He was active in all aspects of campus life and instrumental in the growth and expansion of the technical program and the development of the Garvin Theatre.

Recently, a new sign was installed above the door of the Tom Garey Scene Studio Office, located in the Garvin Theatre.

โ€œTomโ€™s first office was in the scene shop,โ€ Judy said. โ€œItโ€™s meaningful that the office should be named in his honor and commemorate his many years of dedication and service to the SBCC Theatre Department.โ€
