Two major reports—one focused on Santa Barbara County and one evaluating one of the nation's largest Food is Medicine initiatives—arrived at the same conclusion:

The future of prevention is partnership. 🌱

Better health doesn't happen through healthcare alone. It happens when healthcare providers, food access organizations, educators, public health, nonprofits, local agriculture, businesses, and community members work together.

At Rooted Santa Barbara County, we're helping build those connections through healthcare workforce training, bilingual nutrition education, community partnerships, and Food is Medicine programs that make healthy living practical and accessible.

Because preventing, improving, and managing chronic disease takes more than a prescription—it takes a community.

Weekends can be a vulnerable time for individuals experiencing homelessness when standard weekday meal services are closed. That’s why our team launched Santa Barbara’s first weekend takeaway food bag initiative.

Every Friday at the Father Virgil Cordano Center, our team and incredible volunteers pack meal bags tailored directly to the preferences of the people we serve. But what makes this effort truly special is the community that has rallied behind it—including young missionaries from across the country working alongside local volunteers.

Bringing people together to meet an immediate need is at the heart of what we do. We’re so grateful to everyone helping us including Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of Charity to keep this program running strong, and to @ Patricia Martellotti and News Channel 3-12 for sharing our story!

Every weekday morning at 9:00 AM, members begin walking through the doors at the Fr. Virgil Cordano Center in Santa Barbara.

Some have been sleeping in their cars. Others have been couch-surfing or living outside for months, looking for a safe space where someone simply knows their name.

Co-founded by the Daughters of Charity and the Franciscan Friars, the Fr. Virgil Cordano Center is Santa Barbara’s first daytime drop-in center built on radical hospitality, dignity, and unconditional welcome—no appointment or referral needed.
Before housing, healthcare, or employment can happen, trust has to take root. That’s why the most important thing we do happens the second someone arrives: we greet them by name, with a smile, and often a hug.

Together with our staff and 40 amazing volunteers, we provide 140 members every weekday with:
🍲 Hot meals, clean laundry, haircuts, and dry socks
📱 Phone charging and first aid support
📬 A safe, reliable address to receive mail and vital documents
🧭 Compassionate case managers ready to help navigate the path toward housing and stability

At Santa Maria Sober Center, we are dedicated to redefining how our community approaches recovery. Our mission is simple: meet people exactly where they are, remove judgment, and reduce stigma. Our doors are open to individuals aged 18 and older who are actively intoxicated and/or under the influence but conscious, cooperative, and able to walk safely.

Safe Space Triage: Dignified, stigma-free support for individuals in crisis.
Medical Monitoring: Continuous, professional oversight to ensure everyone remains safe, stable, and cared for during their stay.
Warm Handoffs: Seamless transitions and connections into detox facilities, shelters, and other vital community services.
Peer Support Services: Compassionate peers who are there to assist individuals through the process of getting into treatment or to simply sit and listen.

From 1936 to 1985, St. Vincent's School played a vital role in our community, offering a crucial "step into the world" for children with special needs. It was a place where dedicated educators and staff fostered growth, learning, and independence, empowering countless young lives. The legacy of St. Vincent's is one of enduring compassion, innovation, and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
