Music Matters - CAMA Brings Music Appreciation to the Schools

Music Matters - CAMA Brings Music Appreciation to the Schools CAMA's Music Matters brings music appreciation to Santa Barbara area schools. Docents are trained using a curriculum guidebook.

As a yearlong program, Music Matters affords students the opportunity to delve deeply into the world of classical music. "A Classical Music Journey for Young People" (CMJYP) contains three volumes that each have eight units; a single volume is taught over the course of a school year. For its classroom or assembly presentation, CMJYP uses the flexible combination of PowerPoint® and video. The curri

culum’s goal is to foster an emotionally informed approach to music listening. For this it relies on the student’s imagination to understand what is happening in a piece of music. Using mostly classical but some folk and popular music, the curriculum also promotes an awareness of the pervasiveness of music in our lives. CMJYP tries to meet the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of the contemporary student population, and has benefited from years of classroom feedback from students, teachers, administrators and educators. In addition to teaching factual information about the composer, work, and style, docents try to get students to think about the music itself. Docents ask questions that invite students to reflect on their emotional response to the music played. By the end of the year, students have become experienced listeners, and are able to articulate the emotional and expressive dimensions of a piece.

CAMA’s signature education program, Music Matters, is a music appreciation outreach program offered to Santa Barbara and Goleta schools. A yearlong, docent-taught program, Music Matters grants students the opportunity to explore the masterpieces of classical music through its great composers and performers.

The curriculum focuses on an emotionally informed approach to listening. Guided by their own imagination, students learn how to engage with a piece of music. Dr. David Malvinni, musicologist and CAMA Music Education Director, designed the program, A Classical Music Journey for Young People, for fourth through sixth graders.

For the 2013-2014 academic year the program is taught in the following schools by a dedicated team of docents and music teachers: Harding, Monroe, Roosevelt, SB Charter, Adams, Brandon, Foothill, La Patera, El Montecito at San Roque, Notre Dame, and John C. Fremont (Glendale).
