DawnWatch - Daily Animal World News Watch DawnWatch encourages the media to cover animal issues well, so that people can make informed choices. The media is incomparably powerful and influential.

DawnWatch is the only entirely animal advocacy organization entirely focused on influencing mainstream media, where our mission is to encourage and facilitate positive coverage of animal issues. The good news for those of us who wish to help animals is that it is surprisingly easy to influence. DawnWatch works on that in various ways: DawnWatch media alerts, DawnWatch op-eds and columns, the DawnWatch Turkey Rescue, and the upcoming DawnWatch Media Awards Gala. Meat, dairy, and even medication allergies from alpha-gal syndrome get serious attention as they plague the wealthy on Martha’s Vineyard. Could alpha-gal and similarly surprising yet-to-be-discovered issues affect the grotesque “future of organ transplants” covered by the Houston Chronicle this week? They should, and even could, when compounded by the bipartisan backlash against animal testing reported by the New York Times. While we read of a slaughter of elephants in Botswana, we learn of a new book that covers the fight to save rhinos. And there is so much more lifesaving activism: DC activists work to save birds from the foie gras industry, Stella McCartney tries to save sheep from the wool industry while she also urges us to save our seas, and firemen save a trapped deer. This week we have horses and burros rounded up from the ranges at the behest of the cattle industry and killed in the entertainment industry or by reckless police. We also have a goat rescued by police. We see sea lions dying for lack of fish and shot for stealing it, and bears raiding garbage when salmon is sparse. Cats are protected on catios, victimized by partisanship, and rescued by nonpartisan legislation. We learn of a heroic animal savior spending weeks in a crate while an unscrupulous whale killer makes a disturbingly strong point. Raccoons delight us with “surprising” antics and farmers delight us as they swap pigs for mushrooms.

There’s so much going on in the animal media world! While starving cormorants wash up on beaches and entangled pelicans knock on doors, sharks harmlessly swim by swimmers as they are driven closer to shore. Marineland’s “rescued” belugas continue to die. Activists grab hunting permits in an ingenious effort to rescue bears, make progress against bear skin hats, and rescue Korean bears from the hideous bear bile industry. We see coverage of equine abuse during mustang roundups and rodeos, and for the cosmetic industry. The Los Angeles Times puts skid row dogs on the front page. The New Scientist defends animal testing while the Guardian reveals that scientists have created mice with part-human brains. We have coverage of Indian temple abuse of elephants and Yom Kippur abuse of chickens. And an animal-friendly fashion exec loses his job after losing his cool when faced with PETA activists. We see the triumph of bipartisan animal activism as the Farm Bill advances without the aptly named SOB Act, and see an examination of right-wing animal activism from a left-wing media outlet. An Indian leader gets pushback for serving a vegetarian menu at a state dinner, and CNN features a 90-year-old Japanese bodybuilder.

Iceland makes moves away from whaling and Tripadvisor runs from horseracing! Fashion folks push pet adoption as do Lara Trump and her New York gubernatorial candidate guest. A major media column acknowledges profound grief at pet loss while another questions the beneficence of robopets. California’s Catalina Island Conservancy moves ahead with its deer slaughter, while the New York Times advertises efforts to curb the accidental mass slaughter of migrating birds, and touts California’s love of its bears and its famous mountain lion, P-22. One ostrich breeder mourns his ostriches who were shot by neighbors, while another prepares to make his ostriches into steaks. Meanwhile Vox warns us that eating chicken causes an outsized amount of suffering, and the New York Post advertises the merits of veganism! And a pottery studio’s kindness to stray dogs is featured in Korean media. The New York Times finally covers wild mustang slaughter, blaming a longstanding deadly loophole on the current administration, while Australia doesn’t bother looking for loopholes to justify its slaughter. And the Times draws a link between border wall opposition and jaguar protection.

As animal welfare becomes a hot political topic, we see both sides accuse opponents of being puppy killers.

Hayden Panettiere’s final push to free dolphins is released posthumously, while Brittany Mahome flaunts her fhaamily fun with those held captive. Whales die in the New York harbor, and pigs die in gruesome tests that treat them like whales.

A mail carrier beats a peacock and goes viral.

In happier news, we see animal advocates warmly profiled in the world’s leading papers as they tout slaughter-free meat and slaughter-free farm sanctuaries, and write on the cruelty of the carriage horse industry. Stars host news documentaries that expose the dog breeding and fast-food industries.

As always, we find “surprising” reports on the smarts and sentience of other species -- on primates who keep pets, and dolphins and octopuses using tools. And, as an otter appears in the Bronx River, we can celebrate a significant move in the right direction!
