August at Jalama Canyon Ranch — and things are still green. 🌿

is part of how we manage plantings across the ranch. Fresh growth on plants like hummingbird sage is a sign it’s working.

🍂 Oak duff is our mulch of choice — fallen leaves and debris from our oak trees, gathered from the ranch’s roadsides (not the woodland floor, where that layer protects the soil + ecosystem)

🌿 Why it works — holds moisture in, keeps root temperatures cool, and slowly breaks down into nutrients that feed the soil

🌱 Where we use it — vineyards, riparian corridor plantings, elderberry plants, + anywhere we’re establishing new plants

What looks like a simple wire fence is actually a “tree cactus” — a specially designed restoration tool that’s helping us grow the next generation of California sycamores at Jalama Canyon Ranch.

It keeps animals from eating its leaves while it gets established. Once it’s tall enough, we’ll prune the sides and let the canopy keep climbing.

This sycamore is two years old, grown at Santa Barbara Natives Nursery from a local tree estimated at over 200 years old — one that’s made it through droughts, floods, and fires. Every tree started from it carries that same resilience forward.

This is the regenerative agroforestry work we do — planting trees on working land to build shade, habitat, and healthier soil over time.

Six weeks. One ranch. A new way of seeing the landscape. 🌿🎨

This spring, sculptor joined us at Jalama Canyon Ranch as our Artist-in-Residence, spending six weeks walking the land, working with natural materials, and turning what she found into art.

Kim’s work is inspired by the patterns found throughout nature, from the smallest details to the biggest landscapes. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down and really look.

A few of many sculptures she created over the course of her residency:
🪵 Echo — a cast of ancient oak, honoring the memory in its bark
🪵 Woven Crown — gathered branches woven together, celebrating connection
🪵 Reverence to Old Giant — a contemplative hanging installation under the ranch’s oldest oaks
🪵 Magic Oak Embrace — a protective circle of oak wood in a meadow, an invitation to pause
🪵 Bark Beach — a composition of fallen bark echoing the movement of a shoreline

🍷 Summer evenings in wine country are hard to beat.

Join White Buffalo Land Trust and Sandhi Wines at The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, Auberge Collection in Los Olivos for an evening of great wine, live music, and good conversation.

Mattei’s will be pouring several Sandhi wines throughout the evening, including the 2023 White Buffalo Land Trust Pinot Noir—crafted from fruit grown at Jalama Canyon Ranch, where regenerative viticulture is helping build healthier soils, a more resilient ecosystem, and exceptional wines.

The Sandhi team, along with WBLT’s Ana and Jesse Smith, will be there to chat, answer questions, and share the story behind this special partnership.

Rooted in the belief that culture plays a vital role in ecological renewal, this residency supports artists in creating work that cultivates curiosity, fosters connection, and expands the stories we tell about our relationship with the living world.

California is one of the most studied states in the country. And we're still learning what species are living here.

That's especially true on working agricultural land, which is largely missing from large-scale biodiversity studies. For the past three years, we've been contributing to the California All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, collecting insect specimens across the ranch that get DNA-barcoded at .

Insects are the foundation of healthy ecosystems. They pollinate plants, cycle nutrients, support soil health, and sustain wildlife.

The data builds a statewide picture of what's here, how it's changing, and how it connects to the decisions we make on the ground.

The hills are golden brown. These native grasses are still green.

Native perennial grasses are returning to JCR’s pastures. Their deep, permanent roots build soil health and improve water retention year round.

Five years of adaptive grazing and intentional rest periods gave these hidden perennials room to re-establish.

In our monitored pastures, native perennial grass cover has doubled since 2021.
