Every community faces important decisions about how to invest limited public resources and the cost of homelessness is an important part of that conversation.

Keeping a person homeless can cost taxpayers approximately $86,000 per person each year, while providing housing can cost under $40,000 per person annually. This raises an important question about whether our resources are being used to continually respond to crisis or invested in solutions that can create greater long-term stability.

Some people believe affordable housing should be the highest priority. Others emphasize mental health services, employment opportunities, legal support, youth programs, or neighborhood improvements.
