Tibet Day Santa Barbara style

The only foreign flag raised at the county building all year. A rare City and County proclamation about China and their lack of consideration for the human human rights of Tibetans (and Uighurs, Hong Kongers, etc.).

TIBETAN UPRISING DAY
On March 10, 1959, an estimated 10,000 to 300,000 Tibetans gathered in Lhasa, surrounding the Norbulingka palace to protect the 14th Dalai Lama from feared abduction by Chinese forces, marking a massive uprising against Beijing’s tightened control. The protest was brutally suppressed, leading to thousands of deaths, the Dalai Lama’s escape to India, and the flight of 150,000 Tibetans into exile.
Following the 1951 "Seventeen-Point Agreement," Chinese Communist forces occupied Tibet, leading to years of stifling, local rebellions and cultural suppression. On March 9, 1959, Tibetan officials learned of a plan to invite the Dalai Lama to a theatrical performance at the Chinese military headquarters without his bodyguard, fueling rumors of a planned abduction. On March 10, thousands gathered to prevent the Dalai Lama from leaving his summer palace, demanding that Chinese forces leave Tibet.
By March 12, women led protests, and by March 17, shelling of the Norbulingka palace began, with Chinese artillery pounding the city. On the night of March 17, 1959, the Dalai Lama escaped, disguised as a soldier, beginning a two-week journey across the Himalayas to India. Thousands of Tibetans were killed, monasteries were destroyed, and 97% of the 2,500 monasteries operating in 1959 were closed by 1962. About 150,000 Tibetans followed the Dalai Lama into exile.
March 10 is now commemorated annually as Tibetan Uprising Day.

Shameful Nepal

Nepal is just one of at least 150 countries to which Chinese companies are supplying surveillance technology, from cameras in Vietnam to censorship firewalls in Pakistan to citywide monitoring systems in Kenya.
