We would like to thank The Santa Barbara Farmer’s Market for allowing us to provide community education on National Drug Take-Back Days at their Montecito location last Friday (first picture) and at the downtown Santa Barbara location last Saturday (second photo). It was a pleasure to be a part of this community and provide information on proper medication disposal, hand out free “TakeAway” envelopes, and share information on Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics’ and Santa Barbara Opioid Safety Coalition’s mission.

1. Some people believe that keeping oneself busy will solve depression but the problem is often deeper than that. Overworking oneself is actually a sign of depression in men
2. Mental illness isn’t talked about enough and is still stigmatized. Mental health and physical health are linked; depression can manifest itself with physical symptoms.
3.  Medication is one of the many solutions for depression. Psychological treatment is also available in different forms like cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy.
4. Talking to someone (especially a trained health professional) is one of the best ways to ease symptoms. Concealing your feelings can lead you to other coping mechanisms like substance use
5. Treating depression requires persistence but roughly 70% of people who stick with treatments benefit from a serious alleviation of symptoms.
If you or someone you know may be facing depression talk with your primary care provider to get screened and learn your next steps or visit https://nami.org/Home for more information

What are signs that you or someone you know has PTSD?

-Reexperiencing the trauma

-Avoidance of things that are reminders of the trauma

-Emotional numbing

-Increased arousal

-Social problems like avoiding school, behaving recklessly, and avoiding intense feelings with self-harm, alcohol, or other substances

If anyone you know may have PTSD, your support can make all the difference:

-Encourage them to talk about the event and their feelings towards it while being supportive and not criticizing

-Help them come up with constructive alternatives to lessen their feelings of helplessness

-Offer support when they are reminded of the event and become upset

Every year that substance use is delayed during the period of adolescent brain development, the risk of addiction and substance abuse decrease.

What is Clinical Depression?

Clinical depression is more than just sadness, it’s a mood disorder which causes severe symptoms that occur most days and last for at least two weeks, which affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities such as sleeping, eating, or working. It involves low mood and loss of interest or pleasure in activities which you usually enjoy. Source: betterhelp

Clinical depression can go on for years if you don't receive help. Everyone can take steps to curb depressive episodes like eating a balanced diet, spending time with family and friends, managing stress, exercising regularly, and getting a good night’s sleep. If symptoms persist, speak with your primary care provider to learn next steps.
