I had a wonderful time at free museum day! Attendees came over to learn about , their lifecycle, habitats they live in, their ecology, and much more! Here you can see people playing the Southern Steelhead Lifecycle Game (GREAT FOR ALL AGES 🤭).

Southern Steelhead are critically endangered and one the best things about this location was right across the way, is Mission Creek, which runs through the muesum. Mission Creek is known to have steelhead presiding in it. In fact the SB Natural History Museum observed Southern steelhead in Mission Creek not too long ago!

Ogo, or Gracilaria, is our Seaweed of the Week! This red alga can be found worldwide and is commonly grown in aquaculture for food, agar, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other applications.

Seaweed of the Week is developed in collaboration with Dr. Adi Khen from the Smith Seaweed Ecology Lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Dr. Rafael Cuevas Uribe at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Had a great time at CSU Channel Islands STEAM and Arts Carnival. We had a great time learning about Southern Steelhead and the SSC efforts of habitat restoration in the area.

The Santa Clara River mouth. The 1st picture was taken in August 26, 2024. You can see a sand bar has formed, and access to the ocean has been cut off. There's still water but it lessens each day. The 2nd photo was taken February 8, 2024, after a rain storm. It was a raging river and was plowing into the ocean. 7 months really makes a difference. These 2 pictures show what a dynamic environment Southern steelhead live in and experience. It's important that we make sure the only challenges they experience are their natural environmental they are adapted to and not man made challenges.
