Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation Native-led nonprofit leading the way to improve Native American children’s health
(1)

The Notah Begay III Foundation was founded in 2005 by Notah Begay the Third, a Native American former professional golfer and four-time PGA Tour winner, to counter the epidemic of Native childhood obesity and the high-rates of type 2 diabetes. Today, the Foundation continues to champion Native children’s health, believing health is a cornerstone to achieving one’s full potential. To achieve our mi

ssion, we work with and support tribal communities and Native-led organization in their efforts to help Native American youth be healthy and physically active for their lifetime. Our work includes youth programing, grantmaking, research and evaluation and advocacy. We believe that all communities have the inherent knowledge, values and assets to resolve their own challenges and achieve their successes.

It was a hot one on the courts today, but our tennis athletes kept moving, learning and having fun.

We’re excited to see participation in tennis grow from the spring season, giving even more youth the opportunity to stay active, build confidence and learn a lifelong sport.

With the summer heat, safety comes first. Coaches made sure athletes had plenty of water breaks, shade breaks and time to recover between activities so they could stay healthy while enjoying the game.

On May 23, the council gathered at Explora in Albuquerque to welcome six new members for the 2026-2027 term. As the council continues to grow, these young leaders will help shape youth-led projects, community service efforts and opportunities that support Native youth across New Mexico.

✨Alyssa Morris (Pueblo of Santa Ana), a former NB3FIT participant ✨Kiera McCabe (Diné), recent college graduate, business owner and recipient of the 2026 Growing the Future Award
✨Kodin Hoffman (Diné), college freshman
✨Lauren Vallo (Pueblo of Acoma), student-athlete and National Honor Society member
✨Natalie Cheama (Pueblo of Zuni), student-athlete
✨Tiyon Padilla (Pueblo of San Felipe), who brings experience from student council and the Katishtya Youth Council.

Together, they join a growing group of Native youth leaders dedicated to making a difference through service, leadership development and community-driven action. We are excited to support their ideas and watch their impact grow over the coming year.

Final graduate highlight 🎓✨

Today we’re celebrating the final graduating senior from the NB3 Foundation Youth Council Class of 2026, Corey Bird (Pueblo of Santo Domingo and Hopi). Corey has been part of the youth council since the very beginning and has played an important role in helping shape what the council has become today. From leadership and mentorship to showing up for his peers and community, Corey has made a lasting impact on the NB3 Foundation family.

We are incredibly grateful for his years of service, dedication and heart. We can’t wait to see all that he accomplishes in this next chapter as he pursues a future in medicine.

Congratulations, Corey. 👏

Second up in our NB3 Foundation Youth Council graduate highlight series is Ashima Burns, Diné, and the Santa Fe Indian School Class of 2026 Senior Class President 🎓

Ashima has been a thoughtful leader within the Youth Council and a strong voice in our healthy hydration work as a member of the NB3 Foundation Healthy Hydration Advisory Board. Whether she was contributing ideas, building connections or advocating for Native youth wellness, Ashima always showed up with heart and purpose.

This fall, she’ll be heading to Columbia University to double major in Biology and Medical Humanities. While she’ll be continuing her journey from afar, Ashima will still be returning next year as part of the Youth Council community.

We’re proud of all she has accomplished and excited to see the impact she’ll continue to make. Congratulations, Ashima! 💙
