Seeking citizen scientists (that’s you!) 🧑‍🔬

We are launching a new citizen science effort to better understand how proposed changes to the City of Sanibel’s stormwater management plan may affect the island’s interior wetlands and the wildlife that depend on them. As part of SCCF’s broader research initiative examining the impacts of changing water levels on wetland flora and fauna, the Coastal Wildlife team is focusing specifically on wading birds.

While routine rookery surveys are conducted in nearby Pine Island Sound and Estero Bay, there is limited data on nesting wading birds within Sanibel’s freshwater interior. Gathering this information will help researchers better understand how altered hydrology could influence breeding success and habitat use. To support this effort, SCCF is seeking volunteers to help identify nesting areas and assist with nest monitoring throughout the island. No prior experience is necessary, and training will be provided.

Residents, visitors, and community members can also contribute by reporting observations of nesting wading birds. If you see nesting herons, egrets, ibis, anhingas, or other wading birds, please send photos and location information to [email protected].

Summer is right around the corner, and fishing is fun 🎣☀️ but leaving your line behind has lasting impacts on wildlife, shorebirds, and coastal habitats. Always dispose of fishing line properly and help keep our waters safe for everything that calls them home 🌊💚

🐢 Sea Turtle Season is Here! Sea turtles are beginning to nest on our beaches! Let’s all do our part to keep them safe! 🌊💙
Here is how you can help:

•Turn off or shield beachfront lights at night 🌙
•Keep beaches clean – pick up trash and recycle ♻️
•Don’t disturb nests or nesting females 🥚
•Do not use flashlights or flash photography at night 📸
•Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before leaving 🏖️
•Keep pets on a leash and away from nesting areas 🐾

Every small action makes a big difference. Let’s protect our turtles and their habitat all season long!

Renest success with the help of so many amazing community members! 🪹💙

Recently, our Coastal Wildlife team received a call from our friends at CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. about an osprey chick found on the ground near its nest in Pine Island, unable to fly. The chick was brought to CROW for evaluation. After it was determined the chick was healthy and uninjured, Osprey Program Coordinator Amanda along with volunteer Rita, met the Pine Island/Matlacha Fire Department to renest the chick. Once the chick was back in the nest, it took less than 5 minutes for the mom to return!

If you come across fallen ospreys, please call our osprey hotline at 919-8-Osprey (919-867-7739). Call CROW or a wildlife rehab center near you to report all sick or injured wildlife.
