🎉 Celebrating 115 Years of Service

On Thursday, September 7, 1911, Sanger’s Board of Trustees adopted City Ordinance No. 17, formally establishing the Sanger Police Department. The original department consisted of the City Marshal, police officers, and night watchmen, all entrusted with protecting a young and growing community.

Sanger was developing into an important center for agriculture, lumber, and railroad commerce. Its schools, churches, newspapers, bank, packing houses, grain warehouses, and businesses were drawing new families and workers to the area. With that growth came a need for locally controlled police, fire, and municipal services.

Life in 1911 presented challenges that are difficult to imagine today. Roads were largely unpaved, horses and wagons were beginning to share the road with early automobiles, and communications were limited. Wood-frame buildings presented a constant fire risk. Medical services were limited, while communities throughout California confronted sanitation concerns and serious diseases such as typhoid, tuberculosis, smallpox, measles, and diphtheria.

Before incorporation, law enforcement services were primarily provided by county officers. Establishing the Sanger Police Department gave the city officers who belonged to the community, understood its needs, and were directly accountable to the people they served.

Much has changed during the past 115 years. Our department has progressed from foot patrols, night watchmen, and limited communications to a modern public-safety agency equipped with regional radio communications, mobile data technology, specialized training, and more than 40 vehicles.

What has not changed is our responsibility to the people of Sanger. Generations of officers, city leaders, residents, schools, businesses, and community organizations have worked together to make our city safer and stronger.

This week, we proudly celebrate the birthday of the Sanger Police Department and honor everyone who has contributed to its history.

Community Notice Regarding Peacocks

The City of Sanger has received concerns regarding peacocks in a residential neighborhood.

The City’s Animal Control services do not capture, relocate, or otherwise handle wildlife. However, we understand the concerns being raised and are reaching out to wildlife rescue organizations in the area to determine whether they may be able to provide assistance or guidance.

Residents should avoid approaching, feeding, chasing, or attempting to capture the birds. Please keep children and pets at a safe distance. If a peacock presents an immediate threat to public safety, contact the Sanger Police Department.

Last year, during the 2024–2025 school year, our Board proudly launched a scholarship program to support the youth of Sanger. We are honored to continue that tradition for the 2025–2026 school year by recognizing eight outstanding students from Sanger High School and Sanger West High School who applied for and earned these scholarships.

Each recipient was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, for a total of $8,000 in scholarships provided by our organization. Congratulations to Bella, Janelle, Miriam, Omar, Sindel, Kendra, Raul, and Addison on this well-deserved achievement.

On behalf of our entire Board, we congratulate each of these exceptional students and wish the Class of 2026 continued success as they pursue their goals and embark on bright futures.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who supports our organization and helps make opportunities like this possible. Your generosity and commitment truly make a difference in the lives of our youth and strengthen our community.

Sanger PD is hosting a bike rodeo on Saturday, May 23rd from 11 am - 3 pm, for both regular bicycles and e-bikes. Come out and register your bikes, go through an obstacle course and learn safety tips.
