Happy biodiversity week! To celebrate CNPS Sequoia Chapter will be hosting an iNaturalist event at China Creek County Park this Saturday 8/12 at 8 AM. We want your helping documenting pollinating insects at the park. Right now a lot of our late Summer/Fall blooming plants are in full flower so it’s a great time. To participate simply download iNaturalist and create an account (if you haven’t already) and meet us at the park at 8. Please bring a hat, water, sunscreen and your phone. The herbarium will be hosting a volunteer day on Saturday September 5th, from 10AM-1PM. We will have new student specimens to prepare, seeds to inventory, and mystery specimens to ID. This a fun opportunity to learn about the important role herbariums play in plant science and conservation, practice your keying skills, or help make beautiful specimens like the one pictured here (if you love arts and crafts you’ll really enjoy this).

To get in the Science building and into room 324 (where we volunteer), just come up to the 3rd floor via the southeast outside stairs—the door will be propped open. There’s parking under the solar canopies in the parking lot to the east of the Science building, and it’s free on weekends.

We’ll gather outdoors for a peaceful guided meditation designed to help you pause, breathe, release, and simply be.

No experience necessary. Just come as you are.

Please bring your own chair, blanket, or yoga mat to sit comfortably on the grass.

You may also want to bring water, sunscreen, and anything else that helps you feel comfortable outdoors.

Join us for a weekend of botanizing in the Sequoia NF! CNPS Sequoia Chapter Rare Plant Chair and all-around rare plant expert, Chris Winchell, will be leading the trip with the option to stay overnight, camp, and botanize all weekend. Driving to the meeting location is straight forward on paved and dirt roads, but with little to no cell reception, so make sure you have a map! The Member’s hike will take place on Saturday, 8/15:

We will begin our hike from the Summit Trail parking area (36.12359, -118.54978) off Hwy 190, and from there we’ll meander to nearby meadows and microhabitats in search of a multitude of rare and otherwise beautiful species. The hike will start promptly at 1030, so please arrive no later than 1000. We anticipate the difficulty of the hike to be mild/moderate, but please expect uneven terrain, steep slopes, and other typical hiking hazards. We’ll have the opportunity to explore the Castle Fire burn scar, high elevation meadows and streams, old growth forest, and maybe some giant sequoia forest.

We are planning to camp on Friday 8/14 and Saturday 8/15, and you’re welcome to join either or both nights. Watch your email as we will be staking out a primitive campsite near Dome Rock and The Needles in the days preceding the event and will update the specific location asap (the photo above, of The Needles rock formation, was taken from near the site we expect to snag).

Hello everyone!!!! We are going to be having a seed collecting day out at China Creek Park. On June 13 we will be meeting at 8 am out at the park to try and collect some seeds from native plants growing. These seeds will be used in further restoration out at the park. Hey folks! Our friends over at the Sierra National Forest and Student Conservation Association are seeking applicants to fill botany internships for the 2026 field season.

These positions offer a great opportunity for early-career botanists looking to bolster their resume and gain experience in invasive species management, fire ecology, and post-fire vegetation monitoring. Please reach out with questions!

Join CNPS Sequoia Chapter Sunday, April 12th for the kick off of our rare plant monitoring and evaluation program. We will be attempting to fill in a lot of the gaps in the data about two rare species in the Sierra Nevada, orange lupin (Lupinus citrinus var. citrinus) and Abram’s onion (Allium abramsii). Come get trained on how to identify the species, how to collect data, and where to look for it. This will be a fun excursion to see a number of rare plants and maybe even some foothill yellow legged frog if we’re lucky. We will meet at the Auberry Park and Ride at 9 AM and should be done by 1 or 2. Please RSVP for this event to [email protected].
