Right now, there is a lot of focus on the business of sports in North Carolina. Visit North Carolina estimates that the Carolina Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup win may bring as much as $15 million in revenue to local businesses, not even counting ticket sales or direct earnings by the team itself. It may not be traditional economic development, but investment in sports brings real returns. Aside from the direct financial impact, the success of Raleigh’s most visible sports franchise boosts the visibility and quality of life of the city.

Now, Sanford and Lee County don’t have an NHL team (yet), but our community’s own investment in sports has already begun paying dividends. Lee County Athletic Park has been more than just a wonderful amenity for our residents and their families to enjoy; it has begun to grow as a regional hub of youth sports. Every youth baseball or soccer tournament that uses our facilities brings in hundreds of guests who eat at restaurants, shop at stores, stay at hotels, and bring money into our community. It may not quite be a national championship – but it’s one more way investing in ourselves breeds success and prosperity.

With so much going on in Sanford and Lee County, it would be impossible for us at SAGA to keep up without a critical group of dedicated volunteers: our SAGA Ambassadors. Coming from our SAGA Investors, these Ambassadors serve as a critical connection between us and our business community. They touch base with our membership to make sure their needs are met and any problems they’re having get addressed. They welcome new businesses to our area. They attend our events and make sure everyone feels at home. In many ways, they are the face of SAGA.

Yesterday, we had our end-of-year celebration with our 2025-2026 cohort of Ambassadors, who over the course of the year attended more than 60 events, put in more than 450 hours of volunteer work, and made countless small impacts every day. And through all of it, beyond raising their organizations’ visibility and growing their professional networks, they made a lasting contribution to their community.

The 2025-2026 cohort of SAGA Ambassadors are:

Alina Bowden – Adcock Real Estate
Beth Bray – Salvation Army of Lee County (not pictured)
Neil Bullard – Neil’s Apparel & Accents (not pictured)

What does it mean to be a leader in your community? It depends on the person; everyone’s unique talents and interests give them a different way to contribute to a brighter future. But for anyone to succeed as a community leader, they first need a deep understanding of the place they intend to serve.

This morning, we celebrated 14 of these aspiring leaders who, as a part of our Leadership Sanford program, dedicated their time over the past ten months to learning about how our community operates. They spoke with elected officials to better understand the process of local public administration. They toured local industries big and small to see how they drive prosperity. They met with nonprofits filling critical roles serving our vulnerable neighbors. And through all of it, they honed their skills as community leaders, figuring out just how they can best serve others. Whether they put their skills to work in elected office, on nonprofit boards, in business leadership, or anyway else, they are now uniquely prepared to have a positive impact on the people and places around them.

As they officially graduated from Leadership Sanford today, we thank them for their hard work and dedication, and congratulate them on their achievement. The 2025-2026 Leadership Sanford cohort is:

Zaine Aguirre – Tacos El Primo, Inc.
Erin Blakeley – Central Carolina Community College
Alina Bowden – Adcock Real Estate Services
Devan Cruz – Coty
Patricia Degraffenreidt – FirstHealth of the Carolinas
Stacie Eggers – Lee County Schools
Meredith Favre – North Carolina Cooperative Extension- Lee County Center
Lexi Howard – DMJPS PLLC (not pictured)
Morgan Howard – Steel & Pipe Corporation
Meta McCune – Lee County Government - North Carolina
Gabrielle Nixon – Central Carolina Hospital (not pictured)
Michael Romnek – Pilgrim's
Dr. Michael C. Threatt – Elevate Housing Solutions
Carol Wylie – Central Electric Membership Corp

Thank you to everyone who made today’s graduation possible, including the people, organizations, and businesses who opened their doors to them. And thank you to GiGi's Creations for hosting and catering, and to Gather NC Mercantile & Gifts and Visit Sanford for providing a few parting gifts for our graduates. Congratulations!

It’s never too early to start giving back. The Lee County Education Foundation recently honored this year’s two Temple Sloan Lee County Teaching Fellows Program inductees, Bella Derr and Darah Douglas. They join a growing roster of Sloan Scholars: Lee County Schools students with a passion for teaching who are ready to put their talents to use for their community. The Sloan Scholars receive up to $36,000 towards tuition at Central Carolina Community College or a University of North Carolina System school for a degree in education. After receiving their teaching credentials, they’ll return to Lee County to begin their careers as educators, putting their passion to work to shape the next generation.

Many smaller or more rural communities across the United States are having difficulty attracting new teaching talent, hampering their ability to give their youth a strong head start in life. Programs like the Sloan Scholars show that, through engagement and collaboration, it’s possible to “grow your own” talent, cultivating promising students today to be invaluable contributors to our educational ecosystem tomorrow.

Congratulations to Bella and Darah on their achievement, and thank you to everyone who makes the Sloan Scholars program possible, including the Temple Sloan Foundation, Central Carolina Community College, the Central Carolina Community College Foundation, the Lee County Education Foundation, and Lee County Schools.

Over the past few weeks, seniors across Lee County turned their tassels to become high school graduates. Across our community’s public, private, and charter schools, these students have shown commitment, perseverance, and a willingness to learn, and are now ready to move into the next exciting chapter of their lives.

Nearly 1,000 students in total received their diplomas in the past weeks, including:
776 from Lee County Schools
73 from Ascend Leadership Academy
67 from Grace Christian Sanford
15 from Lee Christian School, Sanford NC
And more than 50 from our other private institutions and homeschools.

The class of 2026 racked up more than $12 million in scholarships, which will help propel the more than 400 who are pursuing community college and the more than 300 seeking four-year degrees towards brighter futures. This includes more than 200 eligible for the Central Carolina Promise/K14 program, offering two years of free tuition at Central Carolina Community College for qualifying students.

In addition, more than 40 members of the class of 2026 have chosen to serve their country in the Armed Forces, continuing our area’s strong military tradition.

These numbers aren’t just signs of individual achievement by a host of dedicated and talented students; they’re concrete proof of our community’s commitment to educational excellence. Across all our community’s schools, no matter what model they follow, Lee County is cultivating a workforce ready for tomorrow’s challenges. And while many high school graduates across the country feel pressured to leave home in search of better jobs, we are proud to be a community with plenty of opportunities for them to build rewarding lives and careers in the place they call home.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!

The population of Lee County has never been more than 1% of the total population of North Carolina. And yet, despite the long numerical odds, our community still produced a visionary leader who has left a lasting impact across the state. Yesterday at a special ceremonial court session, a portrait of former Lieutenant Governor Dennis Wicker was unveiled at the Lee County Courthouse, joining the portraits of other celebrated community attorneys and leaders going back to the County’s founding. At the ceremony, joined by his family, friends, and colleagues, Wicker relayed the story of how his commitment to service and integrity propelled him from local lawyer to the General Assembly to the second highest office in the State. All that time, no matter what he was doing – be it toughening drunk driving laws or preventing a toxic waste dump – he held firm to the idea of leaving his community and his state better than he found it.

Community leadership like Wicker’s is extraordinary, but not uncommon in Sanford and Lee County. While none yet have risen to the same level of elected office as he has, men and women with the same dedication to service and to the betterment of their community can be found in every corner of our area, in a variety of roles. As much as any piece of infrastructure, industry cluster, or workforce program, it’s that culture of leadership, exemplified by Wicker, that has made Sanford and Lee County grow and thrive.

Our congratulations and deep thanks to Lieutenant Governor Wicker and his family. We know his example will inspire the next generation of leaders across our county, our state, and our nation.

Yesterday, more than 70 participants gathered at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic and Conference Center for the June edition of SAGA’s Public Policy Luncheon. This month, SAGA itself took the spotlight to talk about a topic that has spurred a great deal of conversation in our community: data centers. CEO Jimmy Randolph spoke on the role SAGA plays in bringing business to Sanford and Lee County, how the rapid growth of the data center industry in North Carolina brought unique challenges and opportunities for our community, and how our elected officials, planning staff, and economic development leaders are responding to protect our area’s people and prosperity. By adopting policies and regulations that allow only modern and sustainable data centers to operate in our area, our leaders are keeping our community open for business while ensuring that, if business does come, it does so only to benefit our residents.

Thank you to everyone who came today to learn more about the state of play for data centers in our community, and to Brannan Schlitz BBQ for providing a delectable lunch. PPL will be taking a break in July, so we’ll see you back again on August 3rd alongside the United Way of Lee County!
