Stevens Center Sanford

Stevens Center Sanford Our goal is to help such individuals be respected and active participants in their community.

Stevens Center is a non-profit organization that empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through programs that promote independence, inclusion, and community engagement. The Stevens Center focuses on providing support to individuals of all ages who have a developmental disability--a significant disability beginning before age 22 (the 'developmental years' of a person'

s life) and that require specialized supports. The Stevens Center is founded on Jane Stevens' donation of 16 acres, where she desired a facility to be built "where individuals with disabilities are treated as first class citizens."

Meet Richie 💙

Richie first came to Stevens Center as an active participant in our Connections group. Today, he works as our front desk receptionist, and he’s quickly become a vital part of our operations team.

Richie has taken on this new role by greeting people, helping out, and keeping things moving. Outside of work, Richie has been busy too. He recently moved in to his own apartment, and he’s been getting more involved outside of the office, including attending community meetings and events.

Richie is working, living on his own, getting out in the community, and broadening his horizons every single day. We’re so inspired by his drive and motivation, and so happy to have him on our team. Thanks for all you do, Richie!

We invite you to join us for an Afterschool Program Meet & Greet!

If you have a child with an intellectual and/or developmental disability and are looking for an afterschool option, join us September 10 from 6:00–8:00 PM to meet our team, learn about the program, and see what we’re planning for a tentative October 5 start date.

✨ Meet the people behind the program:
• Karyn Christopher, Executive Director
• Kirsten Rosser, Access and Outreach Manager
• Our program staff
• Deanna with Sprout Shuttle, as we announce our new transportation partnership 🚌

Learn about the program:
We’ll talk about what afternoons will look like, enrollment, transportation, and payment options. If your child is Medicaid eligible with a qualifying diagnosis, there may be no out-of-pocket cost.

Interested in applying for Medicaid?
Medicaid Ambassadors will be on site to assist families who are interested.

We’ll have snacks, activities, and plenty of opportunities for families to meet our staff and one another.

We value inclusion 💙. Limited private pay slots are available for children without disabilities.

Whether you’re ready to enroll or just want to learn more, come ask questions, meet the staff, and get a first look at what we’re creating. This event is free and open to the community.

Meet Riley 💙

We’re excited to welcome Riley Shackelford to the Stevens Center team as our new Employment Specialist.

A Southern Lee High School graduate, Riley went on to earn her Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration from Central Carolina Community College in 2024.

Family is a big part of Riley’s life. With a large and close-knit family, she spends plenty of her free time at family gatherings, celebrating birthdays, and enjoying time with her siblings and cousins. She also enjoys spending time with friends and stays active in her church, where she volunteers with the children’s ministry.

Riley has an incredible heart for people and a genuine desire to help others become the best versions of themselves. We’re grateful to have her on our team and look forward to seeing the difference she makes.

Join us in congratulating Riley on her new role!

When Stevens Center’s first day program was licensed in July 2024, our Director of Day Services, Kelly Ward-Creagh, envisioned a dedicated space where people could practice the everyday skills of living independently.

That vision became known internally as our “Mock Apartment”, a space where people learn by doing, from preparing meals and practicing household routines to organizing, cleaning, and building skills for everyday life.

This space has done a lot of work over the past two years. Now, it’s getting a little refresh of its own.

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to share the vision and the Stevens Center teaching model with Pfizer. We are incredibly grateful for their support as we transform this space and take it to the next level. Their contribution will allow us to make meaningful improvements and create even more opportunities for hands-on learning and independence.

Thank you, Pfizer, for investing in a space where people can learn, practice, grow, and imagine what’s possible.

Stay tuned for the big reveal!
