THE MOVEMENT
A Movement initiated by a mother and community activist named Tamekia Dowdy who refused to allow challenges to break her down, but instead decided to live intentional and fight back the right way. She lost her son to senseless violence, a son in law who was like a son to drug overdose, watched and prayed for the recovery of a nephew who shot in the head as he slept in his bed, along with the many other issues she witnessed in her own personal family, communities, students and their parents, and used it as strength to help combat the negative save our communities and future generations. This Movement was created to SHAKE communities out of their COMFORT ZONES to awaken those who ARE ASLEEP! It is time for CHANGE and it STARTS with Us!
“I am tired of our young men and young women losing hope and their lives to VIOLENCE, SU***DE, HOMICIDE, DRUG OVERDOSE, and LACK OF MENTAL HEALTH HELP! Our Communities have been TRAUMATIZED and HEALING needs to take place, but before the healing can begin the wounds need to be EXPOSED!
Tamekia Dowdy has truly dedicated her life to God and transforming family tragedy into social change, community awareness, violence, and drug abuse prevention. Dowdy, is sharing her story while inspiring and motivating youth and adults in her local and surrounding communities to be proactive in providing awareness and support. Dowdy is currently working on changing laws. She has met with NC State representatives with her concerns in introducing the Dez’s Law. This Law is named after her late son to prevent conspiracy to commit murder and to hold people accountable for their roles in the result of conspiracy that ultimately leads to death. “You plot, you plan, you pay”.
In 2012 as Dowdy worked for Harnett County Schools she witnessed the many issues first hand that was often faced by many youth and families that left children with limited to no resources for a healthy future. Dowdy was convinced by her children especially her oldest son Desmond to start a nonprofit organization so she founded “Inspire And Motivate Our Future, Inc.” with a heart desire to see change among the youth and communities being served. Dowdy has become an inspiring spokesperson, workshop coordinator, an activist for parents and concerned citizens in Lee, Harnett, and Cumberland Counties in North Carolina.
