Blending Nutrition & Fun at Wells Parks & Rec! 🍌🫐

Today, HEAL Coordinator Casey Marcotte visited the Wells Parks & Recreation After School Program to share simple, fun ways for children to enjoy more fruits and vegetables!

With a group of approximately 60 children, Casey explored the many benefits of eating fruits and vegetables and shared creative ideas for adding them throughout the day. From topping pizzas and mixing them into pasta, soups, cereals, and snacks… as well as blending up delicious smoothies.

Everyone pedaled their way to a tasty, freshly made smoothie to enjoy with their afternoon snack! 🚲🍓

Children also went home with educational handouts to share with their families, along with smoothie recipes to inspire more healthy, delicious creations at home.

A big thank you to Wells Parks & Recreation for welcoming HEAL and helping make healthy choices fun, accessible, and delicious for kids! 👏🏻

Casey Marcotte from our HEAL team led a Physical Activity Learning Session for Infants & Toddlers, sharing information on developmental milestones, best practices, and helpful resources for staff and families. Participants also had the opportunity to try fun, adaptable physical activity games that can be played with all ages.

Casey also guided participants through a hands-on policy revision activity, exploring how program policies can strengthen best practices in physical activity, outdoor play, nutrition, and breastfeeding support. Each center identified an area of its policy to improve, whether through clearer language, stronger recommendations, or other opportunities to better support healthy practices.

Shana Palmer of Sanford First 10 joined for the final hour to share highlights from The Basics, followed by a hands-on “Trash Treasures” activity. Participants explored creative ways to turn everyday recycled materials into simple, low-cost learning tools for young children.

Everyone left with new ideas, valuable resources, practical policy tools, and engaging activities to bring back to their programs, all in support of giving our youngest learners a healthy, active, and enriching start!

A big thank-you to Sanford School Department, The Basics Sanford, York County Head Start, Kids Kove Childcare & Learning Center, Little World 2 Learning Center, and all the early childhood educators who participated and continue to make a difference in the lives of young children and their families!

Prevention starts with awareness.

A simple home medication inventory can help reduce the risk of prescription drug misuse among youth. Know what medications are in your home and store them securely.

HEAL Coordinator Casey Marcotte was back at it at Waterboro Elementary School for Phase 2 of their painted activity trail!

Located right outside several classrooms, this trail will provide opportunities for motor breaks throughout the school day and plenty of fun during recess for all students!

What made this installation extra special? School leadership grabbed paintbrushes and joined in!

A huge kudos to Principal Mrs. Kerri LeSieur and Vice Principal Mr. Timothy Stinson for actively painting alongside the Waterboro PTO- both giving off their time on Sunday morning and again Monday after school. Administrative support is key to creating a school culture where movement and wellness are valued, and seeing leaders roll up their sleeves and participate sends an even stronger message to students and staff: wellness matters here! 👏🏻

Thank you, WES and Waterboro Elementary School PTO for your commitment to increasing opportunities for students to move, play and thrive!
