Our Story
The Spivey Stocking Project was started in 2013 in Sanford, NC in honor of our dear friend Mr. Bill Spivey. Mr. Spivey entered the Alzheimer's Unit at Parkview after Thanksgiving 2013 and my kids wanted to do something for him and his unit. With the help of our wonderful community, we surpassed our goal of providing 30 stockings (for the residents in Mr. Spivey's unit) and ended up sponsoring 107! Enough for 3 nursing homes!
Each resident was personally given a gift that included, a pair of soft socks, a tube of quality hand and foot cream, and a personally signed Christmas card. The residents were then treated to personal visits, entertainment and music from young people ranging in age from 5 to 24 years of age.
In 2014 we had some very generous individual sponsors in our community along with a wonderful new company sponsor, Ammons Chiropractic. Ammons large donation and the Lord's blessing on this project helped us cover 4 nursing homes in 2014 for a total of 187 stockings! This was the last Christmas we had with our precious Mr. Spivey before he was called home to Heaven, and in his memory we hope to continue this project for many years to come.
In 2015 I was approached by an elderly lady while buying some of the items for the stockings, she was so touched hearing me tell the cashier what the items were for. She is the activities director for a Nursing Home also in Lee County and begged me to please come to her facility. I told her we would BOTH pray the Lord would help us do this. I needed 70 more stockings. GOD provided! With his guidance, the kindness of our community and a generous donation from Ammon's chiropractic, we were able to visit 6 nursing homes!!
This year will be our 6th year! I cannot express to you my thanks for bringing such beautiful smiles to these precious residents. I made sure they all knew that although WE were there to distribute the stockings and entertain, but it is their community that bought these stockings for them. I explained that our community believes in them, loves them, and wants them to know how special they are! This brought many tears of joy.
Those of you that have donated, volunteered or prayed for this project, you all truly made a difference in these elderly lives...and not only to these residents but to all of us that witness their joy!
Please consider sponsoring a stocking for one of our elderly in Lee County during our 2016 Spivey Stocking Project. We still have many residents from last year that still need a sponsor for this year. It is only $10 to sponsor a stocking. We will do all the work and place your name on the card, but your sponsorship will bring such joy! For some of these residents, this may be all they receive this Christmas.
