🇺🇸⚓ HAPPY 251ST BIRTHDAY TO THE UNITED STATES NAVY! ⚓🇺🇸

OCTOBER 13, 1775 – OCTOBER 13, 2026

For 251 years, the United States Navy has stood watch over our nation, protecting our shores, defending our freedom, and carrying the American flag across every ocean on Earth. 🌎🇺🇸

From the wooden sailing ships of the American Revolution to the mighty battleships of World War II, from the courage of the sailors who fought at Midway to today's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, submarines, and modern naval warriors, the mission has remained the same: DEFEND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Generations of American sailors have answered the call to serve. They have faced raging seas, relentless enemies, unimaginable hardships, and the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage forged a legacy that continues to inspire every sailor who wears the uniform today.

The ships have changed. The technology has advanced. But the heart of the Navy remains the same — HONOR. COURAGE. COMMITMENT.

Today, we honor every sailor who has served, every veteran who has stood the watch, and every fallen hero who gave their life in defense of our nation.

We recently received an inquiry about the VFW Auxiliary and the VFW's Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen contests and because it is a question that has come up many times before, we would like to share our response.

The question was about what the VFW Auxiliary DOES when it comes to these two contests, as they are both VFW contests.

The answer is that the level of involvement is different from one Post/Auxiliary to another, so there is no "one size fits all," but Auxiliary members have long helped by distributing information to schools, collecting entries from students, arranging the judging or helping to find judges, contacting local media to promote the contest and/or to announce the winners, assisting in holding recognition celebrations for participants, raising money for prizes awarded on a local level and more.

In short, each individual VFW Auxiliary promotes the VFW Voice of Democracy and VFW Patriots Pen contests while supporting their Post in whatever ways the Post finds most helpful - sometimes this means taking a more active approach and sometimes this means taking a quieter background role - but no matter what you do, make sure to report your participation and fundraising under Scholarships.

And spread the word about these scholarships and contests today!

Our Toys for Tots Wish List is growing!

It includes items for the age groups where we have the greatest need, along with specific, unique items that local children have requested this Christmas.

The Wish List will continue to be updated as more applications are accepted and we learn what children are hoping to find under the tree.

The best part? When you purchase through our Wish List, your donation is shipped directly to Lee County Toys for Tots, helping ensure your gift stays right here to support local children and families.

There is another story behind the poppy—the hands that make it.
For generations, Veterans have helped produce memorial poppies. The tradition has provided Veterans with meaningful activity, while the poppies themselves help generate support for Veterans, military personnel, and their families. In 1952 alone, nearly 9,700 disabled Veterans produced more than 26 million poppies for Auxiliary distribution.
When you hold a memorial poppy, remember: its story is about more than remembrance. It's also about purpose, dignity, and service.
