Canyons School District employees are helping their colleagues turn dreams of becoming teachers into reality — one paycheck deduction at a time. Today, the Canyons Education Foundation awarded the third annual Aspiring Canyons Educator (ACE) Scholarship to Albion Middle School paraeducator Jackson Christensen, continuing a growing “grow your own” effort designed to support aspiring educators already connected to Canyons schools. For two years, Christensen has worked for Albion’s Essential Elements Classroom, supporting special education students in grades 6-8. Working there, which he plans to continue doing while working toward his teaching degree at Utah Valley University, is how he realized the classroom is where he belongs. “Whether it is helping a student regulate their emotions, complete an assignment, or simply have a better day than the one before, those small wins over time can mean a profound change for a student and their family,” he says. Christensen has developed a reputation for his initiative and professionalism. “He has built remarkable relationships with students,” wrote Albion EEC teacher Hannah Evans. “He takes time to listen, understand, and connect with students in meaningful ways. It is not uncommon for students to argue over who gets to work with him.” ACE recipients receive up to $5,000 each year as they progress toward earning their teaching degree and licensure, helping cover tuition costs from the start of their program through graduation. Previous recipients continue receiving annual scholarship support as they advance in their studies. “This is a way for educators to inspire and mentor the next generation of teachers,” says Denise Haycock, Development Officer for the Canyons Education Foundation, which administers the employee payroll-deduction program that funds the ACE Scholarships. “Teaching is such a rewarding career, so why wouldn’t we want to grow the next generation of teachers from within by supporting students who aspire to teach and employees who have already dedicated years of service to our schools? Knowing you're helping a colleague with these donations feels good.” Jackson is among six ACE scholarship recipients currently receiving funding, including Jonathan Kesler, Alyssa Hill, Melody Otterstrom, James Merrill, and Samantha McCullough.
