🚨 FOXTAIL DANGER: What Every Dog Parent Needs to Know This Spring & Summer 🌾
As the weather warms up here in Utah, a hidden danger is lurking along our trails, sidewalks, and open fields: Foxtails.
These barbed seed heads from grassy weeds are shaped like tiny arrows. Because of their design, they are meant to dig into the ground—but if they get caught in a dog's fur, they move in only one direction: forward. They can easily pierce a dog's skin, migrate deep inside the body, and cause severe damage, severe pain, and dangerous infections.
💔 Meet Our Recent Rescue
We recently welcomed a sweet girl into the UAAF family who experienced the terrifying reality of these weeds firsthand. Moira was found heavily matted, but beneath the tangled fur lay a much more painful truth!!
Several foxtails had embedded themselves deep into her skin, completely hidden from view. Because they were left untreated, they created deep, painful pockets of infection that required immediate veterinary medical intervention to drain and treat. Thanks to her amazing foster home and our network of veterinarians, she is finally safe, comfortable, and on the mend—but her story is an urgent reminder to all of us.
