Every cold case deserves a second look.

A case becomes “cold” when all investigative leads have been exhausted—but it is rarely ever truly closed. In homicide cases, there is no statute of limitations. The search for answers doesn’t end.

What changes? Opportunity.

Advances in DNA technology—especially Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG)—are helping crack cases once thought unsolvable. We are now able to test evidence that was once considered unusable, and the quality of testing continues to improve. This means old evidence can be re-tested with new precision, revealing answers that simply weren’t possible before.

At the Sherry Black Foundation, we are doing everything we can to provide resources to support creating this momentum—but we cannot do it alone. We need the public.

You can help bring answers and justice:
• Become a genetic witness by uploading or transferring your DNA to GEDmatch and opting into IGG
• Donate to support ongoing casework and resources
• Spread awareness about our mission
• Educate yourself and others about the power of IGG

Cold cases aren’t forgotten—they’re waiting. And together, we can help give them the second chance they deserve.

At the center of every unsolved case is a real person—not just a story. Someone who was loved, who mattered, and who deserves dignity. These cases don’t get solved in isolation—investigators need leads, families need to be heard, communities need answers. It could be your neighbor, a friend of a friend, even someone in your own family. Listening with respect keeps the focus where it belongs: on truth, justice, and accountability.

Being part of the true crime community means more than just listening. It means honoring victims and their families, respecting boundaries, avoiding harmful speculation, and choosing compassion over curiosity.

But you can also do more.

You can help bring answers to cases that have gone unsolved for years by becoming a genetic witness. By uploading your DNA to GEDmatch, DNA Justice, or FamilyTreeDNA and opting in to IGG, you’re helping give investigators the tools they need to identify victims and solve violent crimes. The more people who participate, the more powerful this tool becomes. Please look into the 'get involved' section on our website to learn more about how easy and important it is to become a genetic witness. https://sherryblackfoundation.org/get-involved/

Cold cases aren’t just stories—they’re real people still waiting for answers. And when you hear about a case finally being solved, imagine knowing you played even the smallest part in that outcome.

Listen with care. Remember the person. Support justice.

We’re honored to be attending CrimeCon this year as part of the mission of the Sherry Black Foundation—and our purpose is clear.

We’re there to support the powerful stories shared by experts and, most importantly, by the families behind cases that have been solved—and those still waiting for answers. True crime is not entertainment alone. Every case represents a real person, a real family, and a lasting absence. Across the country, there are more than 300,000 missing, unsolved, and unidentified individuals whose stories remain unresolved. That number should come with the weight of every victim's story.

Our goal is to help listeners and attendees understand that they can play a role.

At our booth, we’ll show you how to get involved in a meaningful, tangible way. You can contribute by donating, and you can become a genetic witness—someone who helps expand the databases used in investigative genetic genealogy. We’ll walk you through how to securely transfer your genetic data to DNA Justice, making it simple to support efforts that have already helped bring names back to the unidentified and answers to families.

CrimeCon is an opportunity to learn from leading voices in forensic science, investigations, and advocacy—but it’s also a place to turn awareness into action.

If you’ve ever followed a case, shared a story, or wondered how you could help—this is your moment to step closer.

Come find us. We’ll help you take the next step.

What are private DNA labs bringing to the table?

At the Sherry Black Foundation, we’re seeing more and more agencies rely on private forensic labs to help expand investigative capacity, speed up results, and access advanced DNA analysis tools.

With the sheer volume of cases, law enforcement agencies often exhaust state lab resources. That’s where private labs step in—working more closely with cold cases, as well as unidentified and missing person investigations that need dedicated time and attention.

Labs like DNA Labs International, Signature Science, Astrea, Bode Technology, Resolve Forensics, and Othram are helping push the field forward. In many cases, they offer advanced technologies and specialized testing that simply aren’t available through state labs.

These partnerships are making a real difference—helping bring answers to families, identifying the unidentified, and moving long-stalled cases toward resolution. Every advancement means another opportunity for justice.

This Mother’s Day, we hold space for all mothers — and for all who carry the love of a mother in their hearts.

We know this day is not simple for everyone. For some, it carries a quiet heaviness — the absence of a child, the absence of a mother, or the ache of memories that feel just out of reach. Love doesn’t disappear with loss, and neither does the longing.

At the Sherry Black Foundation, this understanding is at the core of everything we do. Our founder knows this journey personally — after spending years fighting for answers and justice in her own mother’s case, long after it had gone cold. That experience shaped a mission rooted in persistence, compassion, and hope for other families walking a similar path.

Because we understand this mission so personally, we are committed to standing in the fight for every family and every case — working to ensure each one has the attention, resources, and determination it needs to be solved. Because every ONE matters.

We know that when justice is finally found, something shifts. It doesn’t erase the loss, but it brings a sense of peace — a release from the constant weight of unanswered questions. Justice allows families to breathe again, to remember their loved ones for who they were in life, not only how they were taken.

We stand with you. We remember with you. We continue the work, so more families can find the peace they deserve.

With love,
The Sherry Black Foundation

We are overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement to share that, together, we raised a total of $5,705!

Our original goal was to raise $2,500 from the public—generously matched by an anonymous donor to reach $5,000—and because of your support, we didn’t just meet that goal… we surpassed it.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward advancing cold cases through forensic testing, investigative processes, and specialized training for law enforcement. At the Sherry Black Foundation, we are deeply committed to advocating for victims of violent crime by equipping investigators with the resources and knowledge they need to move unsolved cases forward.

And at the heart of this work are the families—who continue to wait, hope, and carry their loved ones with them every single day. Even when cases grow quiet, their need for answers never fades. Every case matters. Every story matters. Every person matters.

To everyone who donated, shared, and supported this effort—thank you. Your kindness and belief in this mission truly make a difference.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to continue supporting this work, we warmly invite you to consider becoming a monthly donor to help ensure we can keep pushing cases forward and supporting those who need it most.

From the bottom of our hearts—thank you for standing with us.

At the Sherry Black Foundation, we know training and technology can be the turning point between unanswered questions and long-awaited justice.

Here’s the impact: if just 40 people give $25, it’s enough to sponsor a training—equipping investigators with the tools they need to solve cases and bring closure to families.

Today is National DNA Day

It’s important to know that Ancestry doesn’t allow law enforcement use for investigative genetic genealogy (IGG). But you can take a simple extra step—transfer your DNA to GEDmatch and opt in.

Over 80% of GEDmatch users have already chosen to opt in, helping provide critical leads in violent crime and cold case investigations.

This is a real way to be part of the solution. It’s quick, free, and your choice could help bring answers to families who’ve been waiting far too long. Small action, real impact.
