Generative AI is opening new possibilities for how people with disabilities interact with digital content.

A recent experiment from Elastic explores what an AI-powered screen reader could look like, including the ability to summarize web pages, interpret charts and images, and respond to follow-up questions. It also surfaces an important consideration: AI-enabled accessibility tools must be developed responsibly, with accuracy, user control, and the lived experiences of persons with disabilities at the center.

A PDF can look polished and still create barriers.

Without proper structure, headings, lists, tags, and a logical reading order, people who use screen readers and other assistive technologies may not be able to navigate or understand the content as intended.

Accessible PDFs help ensure that important information remains usable, navigable, and inclusive for persons with disabilities. Building accessibility into documents from the start - and checking it before they are shared - helps make accessibility part of the content, not an afterthought.

The deadline moved. The work didn't.

DOJ extended ADA Title II compliance to April 2027 and 2028.

For the teams already doing this work, nothing about the job changed. The web content still needs to meet WCAG 2.1 AA. The documents still need remediating. The procurement language still needs writing. The people doing it still need to know how.
