Building stuff is fun but maintaining what we have is better!
Thank you for your remarkable and generous outpouring of support for BYM’s camp properties in the last couple of years! With your support, we have been able to replace almost all of the camper cabins at Catoctin, Opequon, and Shiloh Quaker Camps. We have built tent platforms, patios, pavilions, roads, kiosks, fire circles, ponds and the list goes on and on.
Now we need to maintain all that! Maintenance can be a little less exciting than new building projects but they are just as important for maintaining safe, functional and marketable camps. Quaker camps change lives and give shape to the future of the Religious Society of Friends. To keep our camps strong, we need to take great care of our facilities. Can you help us preserve camp for the years to come? Every gift counts and we rely on the generosity of Friends and the camp family! Send your Giving Tuesday gift today: https://igfn.us/form/8faKtg

Happy Autumn! While BYM camps come alive in summer, taking care of our camp properties is a four season (love) affair. The wild lands of and around our camps are an enormously valuable haven for us and other living things. Whether you have sent kids to a BYM camp, were a camper yourself, or worked at a BYM camp, you know and value the wild places that are part and parcel of our programs. Please consider giving today to our camp properties; Catoctin, Shiloh and Opequon need our care and investment. We all want our camps to sustain future years, and generations of human, plant and other forms of life on our planet. Thank you for your Giving Tuesday gift: https://igfn.us/form/8faKtg

Thank you! Over the years, hundreds of F/friends have volunteered their time and expertise to help keep BYM Camps in tip top shape! We love you! As Giving Tuesday gets started this year, please consider supporting the work of these fine volunteers and staff who create and maintain spaces for Camp Magic to flourish for about 600 campers each summer! Dear BYM Camper Families -

Like many of you, we watched in horror and heartbreak over the weekend at the news of flash flooding in Texas - including the deaths of more than two dozen girls and their counselors at Camp Mystic summer camp in Hunt, Texas. Our hearts go out to every family affected by this tragedy, and we wanted to reach out and update each of you on the flooding protocols at BYM Camps. Though our camps are outside its projected path we will continue to keep a close eye on post-tropical storm Chantal and prepare for the potential of future storms throughout the summer season.

None of the camper cabins and platform tents at BYM Camps are located within floodplains - even in the event of "100 year" flooding.

All four BYM Camps - Catoctin, Shiloh, Opequon, and Teen Adventure - have flash flood protocols at camp and on the trail. These protocols were updated in the Spring of 2025 as part of our annual review of emergency protocols.

Anytime inclement weather is in the area of camp or backpacking trips - lightning, flooding, wildfire and decreased air quality, or extreme heat - our Camp Directors are in close contact with our Camping Program Manager, Zora Tucker, or General Secretary, Sarah Gillooly, to continuously assess risk, communicate with counselors and trip leaders, and adjust as needed to keep your camper safe.

Each year during the off-season, we gather to discuss how the changing climate is impacting our camps and camper safety and to consider new and evolving best practices in emergency management for children's summer camps.

In this era of ecological change and instability, we believe it is more important than ever to help young people connect to the earth with joy, with reverence, and with community care. Thank you for entrusting your young person to BYM Camps this summer. We will continue to take the threat of inclement weather and climate instability seriously and to do everything in our power to keep your camper safe.

With Care,
Zora & Sarah G
