We are beyond excited to welcome, Silvia Caswell to the GBF team as an advisor! Silvia comes to GBF with a wealth of knowledge with nearly 7 years in Maternity/Labor & Delivery to research in Anthropological Genetics and Biogenetics. She brings a keen passion to the team that stems from deeply personal experiences with the transformative powers of health and fitness. Currently, she currently pursues a doctoral degree in Osteopathic Medicine and while developing a Lifestyle Medicine residency curriculum to be implemented across the United States through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for the continued support and encouragement of our community! Two weeks ago, we were humbled to join the Ward Educational Fund at their annual gala in Rockville to receive the Community Service Award. Thanks so much to the Ward Fund for the honor and recognition of what so many have helped us accomplish. We don't take this outpouring for granted and truly appreciate how much our community cares about changing the health circumstances in rural areas.

After the Ebola pandemic in Liberia, we made the difficult decision to suspend our MCP projects while we focus on how we can better tackle maternal and infant mortality. This time of reflection has birthed a renewed sense of duty, responsibility and reflection on how much we have learned in the last 5 years. One point of change includes exciting, new updates to our hallmark project, the Maternal Care Package. We look forward to sharing more in the coming months and relaunching in early 2017.

Having a baby is a major life event and can cause worry, tiredness and sadness. Usually these feelings don’t last long, but if they persist you may be suffering from depression.

This is Dr. Rhoda Peters. A phenomenal doctor, mother, and neighbor. You may remember Dr. Peters as an advisor to GBF in our earlier years. During the height of the ebola outbreak last year, Dr. Peters died of causes her family has yet to confirm. She left behind a loving husband and two adopted children. Dr. Peters adopted her son, pictured here, after his mother passed away during childbirth in her arms. She was a true champion for rural women as the Chief Medical Officer of the only government hospital in Bomi County and a champion for progress in Liberia.

This year, we dedicate International Women's Day to women like Dr. Peters that are the backbones of modern society even in the most forgotten, marginalized and underserved communities. We honor your lives.
