DON’T JUST REMOVE THE DEBRIS—REPURPOSE IT.
When large woody debris (LWD) creates a logjam or obstruction, complete removal isn’t always the best long-term solution.
At Rivermend, we look at the entire waterway and ask: Can this material be safely repurposed to help the ecosystem instead?

When properly placed and secured, LWD can:
🌊 Create valuable aquatic and semi-aquatic habitat
🌱 Act as a natural biofilter and support water quality
🪵 Help stabilize streambanks and shorelines
🐟 Improve habitat complexity
♻️ Keep valuable biomass within the ecosystem
🛡️ Help protect areas of the same waterway where debris once created problems

When LWD cannot safely remain within the active waterway, it can often be relocated and secured within the riparian zone, reducing the chance that it will re-enter the channel during future high-water events.

Rivermend utilizes natural fiber lashings to secure woody debris when appropriate. As the wood naturally decomposes and becomes incorporated into the surrounding environment, the lashings degrade as well—creating a low-impact solution designed to work with the waterway.

Every logjam is different. Every stream is different. That’s why the right solution starts with seeing the site firsthand.

Have a logjam, woody debris accumulation, erosion problem, or waterway concern? Schedule a scouting visit with the Rivermend team.

We’ll evaluate the site, identify potential risks and opportunities, and help determine whether removal, relocation, repurposing—or a combination—is the right approach.

Don’t wait for the next high-water event to make the decision for you. Contact Rivermend today to schedule your scouting visit.

WHEN TRADITIONAL ACCESS ISN’T AN OPTION, RIVERMEND FINDS ANOTHER WAY.

Our team was recently in Athens, Ohio, scouting a potential project that is a perfect example of where Rivermend’s specialized, low-impact approach can make a difference.

A significant log jam and woody debris accumulation is putting pressure on a biking and pedestrian bridge. With limited access around the structure, traditional cleanup methods involving large excavators and heavy equipment could be difficult, disruptive, or simply impractical.

That’s exactly the type of challenge our team is built to solve.

LOW-IMPACT LOG JAM & WOODY DEBRIS MANAGEMENT

Depending on site conditions, Rivermend can develop a customized approach that may include:

Strategic cutting and removal of large woody debris
Portable winching systems for difficult or remote-access locations
Rigging and controlled extraction techniques
Selective removal rather than unnecessarily clearing an entire waterway
In-stream and bank-side work designed to minimize disturbance
Removal of debris creating pressure against bridges, culverts and other infrastructure
Repurposing appropriate woody material for habitat or bank stabilization when conditions allow

Our goal isn't simply to remove a log jam. We evaluate why it formed, how water and debris are moving through the site, what infrastructure is at risk, and what can be done to reduce future problems.

BE PROACTIVE BEFORE THE NEXT HIGH-WATER EVENT

Routine scouting and waterway assessments can identify developing debris accumulations before they become major obstructions. Early intervention may help protect:

Bridges • Culverts • Roads • Trails • Streambanks • Public Infrastructure • Private Property

Removing or managing problem woody debris while it is still accessible can be far more manageable than responding after a major storm sends additional trees, sediment and debris downstream.

Whether you're dealing with an existing log jam or want to identify potential problems before the next flood or high-water event, Rivermend can help.

Schedule a scouting visit with our team.

Let us walk the site, evaluate the conditions and help develop a practical, solution-driven approach for your waterway.

When the Water Rises, the Riverbank Takes the Hit.
Read our latest article and learn more about emergency bank stabilization:
https://www.rivermendllc.com/emergency-bank-stabilization/

Severe weather can change a waterway in a matter of hours. Increased flows create tremendous erosive forces—undercutting banks, threatening infrastructure, damaging habitat, and sometimes creating situations that require emergency bank stabilization.

But emergency stabilization doesn’t have to mean automatically cutting the bank back and covering it with riprap.

While riprap can be effective in the right application, speed of installation shouldn’t be the only factor determining the long-term solution.

In our latest article, Emergency Bank Stabilization, Rivermend takes a closer look at the challenges of responding to severe erosion and why it’s important to consider solutions that address both the immediate threat and the long-term health of the waterway.

🌱 Stabilize the bank.
🌊 Protect the waterway.
🏗️ Safeguard nearby infrastructure.
♻️ Build a solution designed for the future.

If severe weather has damaged a streambank, creek, river, bridge approach, culvert, or other waterway on your property or in your community, contact Rivermend to discuss stabilization options and schedule a site assessment.

Be Proactive Today. Be Better Prepared Tomorrow.

Flood recovery doesn't begin after a disaster—it begins with proactive waterway management.

One of the most effective ways communities can reduce flood risks is by managing streams and rivers before the next major storm. Logjams and large woody debris (LWD) can restrict water flow, accelerate erosion, undermine streambanks, and create dangerous pressure on bridges and culverts. Left unchecked, these blockages can contribute to flooding that threatens homes, businesses, farmland, roads, utilities, and other critical infrastructure.

At Rivermend, we help communities prepare for tomorrow while standing ready to respond when disaster strikes.

Our services include:
🌊 Logjam & Large Woody Debris (LWD) Removal
🌱 Streambank Stabilization & Erosion Control
🏗️ Bridge & Culvert Protection
🚧 Infrastructure Protection
🌿 Waterway Restoration & Habitat Improvement
🚨 Emergency Disaster Debris Removal & Flood Cleanup

Our specialized low-impact techniques allow us to safely access areas where traditional heavy equipment often can't operate, minimizing environmental disturbance while solving some of the most challenging waterway and disaster recovery projects.

Rivermend proudly partners with local, state, and federal governments, as well as private landowners, to help protect lives, property, natural resources, and critical infrastructure through proactive planning, emergency response, and long-term resilience.

Whether you're preparing for the next flood event or recovering from one, our experienced team is ready to help.

Legacy Dumpsites Don't Have to Stay That Way.

Across the country, communities are tackling legacy dumpsites filled with tires, appliances, scrap metal, abandoned vehicles, and other debris. That's where Rivermend makes the difference.

Our innovative, low-impact remediation techniques allow us to remove debris from places others consider "impossible"—often without disturbing the surrounding environment and, in many cases, without requiring permits for heavy equipment access.

✅ Illegal dump site cleanup
✅ Tire & scrap metal removal
✅ Remote-access remediation
✅ Wetland & sensitive habitat restoration
✅ Innovative solutions where traditional methods fall short

If your community, agency, or organization is facing a challenging legacy dumpsite, let Rivermend help turn an impossible project into a successful one.
